Padres call up Oxnard's McAnulty to replace injured Brian Giles

San Diego Padres right fielder Brian Giles went on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday with an annoying bone bruise in his right knee.

To take his place on the roster, the Padres recalled infielder-outfielder Paul McAnulty, an Oxnard High graduate, from Triple-A Portland.

Giles missed five straight starts before the Padres decided to sit him down. The move was retroactive to last Sunday. Giles said he originally hurt his knee when he ran into a door in the outfield wall at Wrigley Field in mid-April, and tweaked it several days later chasing a fly ball at Colorado.

Giles hopes to be activated in time for a home series against the rival Los Angeles Dodgers starting June 5.

McAnulty made the opening-day roster but was optioned to Portland on April 18.

Cox moves one away from tying record with 130th career ejection: After being tossed from a game for the second straight day, Bobby Cox was in no mood to talk about where he stands on the career record for ejections.

"I don't want to talk about the record," Cox said. "Talk about the game."

Cox's ejection was his fifth of the season and the 130th of his career, leaving him only one behind John McGraw's record of 131.

Cox already has the record for most ejections by a manager, since 14 of McGraw's ejections came as a player.

Mets' Green looking to avoid disabled list: New York Mets right fielder Shawn Green said he will have more tests on his broken right foot in an effort to avoid being placed on the disabled list.

Green got a small fracture on his right foot Friday night during the Mets' 6-2 win over the Florida Marlins. He got the injury on a foul tip while batting in the ninth inning, and will have a bone scan and further tests Monday when the team is back in New York.

Green said the Marlins doctors, who examined his foot, said the injury could sideline him anywhere from a few days to a month.

Damon to stay off DL for now: Yankees center fielder Johnny Damon was out of the lineup against the Angels because of recurring leg problems, but for now will avoid his first career trip to the disabled list.

Damon left Friday night's 10-6 loss for a pinch hitter because of cramps in both calves and a sore Achilles' tendon in his right leg.

Matsuzaka feels better after leaving Friday's game: Boston's Daisuke Matsuzaka said his health is improving after leaving Friday night's game against the Texas Rangers because of the stomach flu.
