Ventura team finishes second

The Ventura Stiix team finished second in the Billiards Congress of America's National Eight Ball Championships held May 15-20 at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

The Stiix team included Jose Garcia of Fontana, Frank Almanza of Upland, Rodrigo Espinoza of Los Angeles, Ron Marshall of Silver Strand Beach and Jerry "Stiix" Matchin of Ventura.

Seven hundred five-player teams competed. The tournament attracted players from more than 25 countries, including Germany, Spain, Canada, Philippines, Japan and South America, and players from all over the United States.

The Stiix team was beaten by an Illinois team for the championship. The Ventura team earned $9,000 and individual trophies.

Matchin said Billiards Congress of America leagues are held throughout the world, including several sites in Southern California.

Tournament of Champions: Stiix Billiards will host the Tournament of Champions on June 10 at 1 p.m. Entry fee is $20, plus $3 green fee. There will be a free barbecue for players.

BOWLING

Camarillo Bowl hosts regional

Professional bowlers from Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Hawaii and California are expected to compete in the PBA West Region Harley's Camarillo Bowl Open Saturday and Sunday.

Pro-am events are scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Qualifying squads are scheduled Saturday at 8 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The semifinals begins Sunday at 8 a.m., followed by a 16-player match-play finals at 11 a.m.

County bowlers Bill Machin of Simi Valley, Mike Kanada of Camarillo and Mason Sherman of Moorpark are ranked among the top regional bowlers. Former Thousand Oaks resident Robert Smith is ranked in several regional categories.
