Camarillo Cougars open with two wins

The Camarillo Cougars under-19 women's field hockey team opened the 36th California Cup field hockey tournament on Saturday with a pair of wins at Moorpark College.

The Cougars defeated San Marcos of San Diego 5-0 in their first game. The Cougars defeated Campbell of Northern California 4-1 in the second game. It was Campbell's first game.

Sam McPherson scored on a breakaway goal for the final goal against Campbell.

"The team played well," said Cougars coach Patrick O'Reilly. "We hadn't played this well in a long time."

The Cougars had five different players score in the opening game.

The Cougars return to action today at 11 a.m. and play again at 4 p.m.

The Cougars have never won the California Cup championship, but have finished second four times.

Tom Harris, the founding father of the Cal Cup, expects two-time defending champion Ciudad de Buenos Aires and the Namdhari Hockey Academy of India to square off in Monday's 2:15 p.m. Men's Super Division championship game.

In the Women's Super Division, defending champion Monarcas of Los Angeles and Buenos Aires are on a collision course for the title game.

Today's games start at 7 a.m. at Moorpark College and Cal Lutheran.

Monday's action features semifinal and championship games in all divisions at Moorpark College.
