Oxnard's Giebler quickly gets up to speed

INDIANAPOLIS Rookie Phil Giebler ran more laps 46 than any other driver at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during Friday's final practice for Sunday's Indianapolis 500.

The Oxnard native had a fastest lap of 219.143 mph, 27th on the speed chart in the 33-car field, and afterward pronounced the tune-up "pretty good."

"We'd like a little bit more speed, but the car's fairly comfortable," he added. "That really was my first run with full tanks and getting up to speed, trying to see what it feels like around cars. It's the first time everybody has gotten together with all the spotters and all the cars out there, so it's completely different from any practice we've had."

Asked whether his Playa Del Racing crew will make changes on his Panoz/Honda before Sunday's race, he replied, "I hope not too many.

"We're pretty close as far as being consistent; I can run consistent laps. We really can't do too many changes at this point. The car is feeling pretty good. I think we're going to have a good race. I'm feeling confident."

As for the start of the race, which he will view from the 33rd starting spot, he said: "It's going to be like driving through a tornado or a hurricane. I just have to stay clean on the first 10 laps."

In the final Indy 500 practice session, Andretti Green Racing drivers dominated the top of the speed chart. Tony Kanaan was fastest of the day with a lap of 225.467. Dario Franchitti was second quick at 223.807, and Michael Andretti was third at 223.575.

It was a Team Penske battle in the final round of the Checkers/Rally's Pit Stop Challenge, with Helio Castroneves and crew beating Sam Hornish Jr. with a time of 8.335 seconds to Hornish's 8.888 second stop.

Lloyd wins Freedom 100: Road course or oval, Alex Lloyd knows the fastest way around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Lloyd took the lead on the first turn, stayed in front all 40 laps and beat Chris Festa under yellow to win the Indy Pro Series' Freedom 100 on Friday.

"The car was unbelievably quick. I could keep my foot to the floor all the way around," Lloyd said.

The win on the Speedway's 2.5-mile oval was his fourth in as many races this season. He also won the Liberty Challenge on the 2.6-mile, 13-turn road course last summer, and Friday's victory made him the only driver to win on both track layouts.

"It was a textbook race," said Lloyd, a 22-year-old Englishman in his second season in the IRL's top developmental series.

He started second but passed pole-winner Ken Losch almost immediately. Lloyd built his lead to 2.5 seconds midway through the 100-mile race and to 3.4 seconds over Festa before the yellow caution light was displayed for a crash by rookie driver Joey Scarallo. Lloyd began pulling away again after the restart with four laps to go, but the final yellow came out the same lap when a light rain began to fall.

Lloyd led the single-file parade behind the pace car for the final four laps, crossing the finish line 0.4131 seconds ahead of Festa. Jaime Camara, the Freedom 100 winner two years ago, was third.
