The public is invited to a free screening of "Gandhi" this afternoon in Thousand Oaks.

The 1982 biopic on the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi is the next in a recently instituted "Last Saturday of the Month Movie Series" at the St. Patrick's Episcopal Church.

The movie screens at 4:30 p.m. today in the Buena Vista Room of the church's Hager Parish Hall. The church is at 1 Church Road in Thousand Oaks.

An order-out supper will be served at 6 p.m., during a 45-minute inter-mission.

"Gandhi" chronicles the life of the world-renowned proponent of peaceful revolution who led India's fight for independence and was subsequently assassinated.

Shown from digitally remastered videos, the movies in the series vary widely in subject matter but all share positive themes including growth and religious teachings.

That is the simple and only point of the series.

"It's just a nice chance to see a free movie," said Richard Buckner, who founded the series.

The retired computer scientist said his motivation in creating the monthly event is "simply to do something positive and to suggest that some of the older movies have some values."

"I just have always wanted to do this," he said.

He said he hopes to see a wide swath of the community at the event. "Hopefully some young people will come out," he said. "We want this to be a chance for people of all ages to come and enjoy a good movie."

The general public is welcome. "There's no obligation," he said. "It's just kind of an outreach thing."
