S.P. man held in sex assault
A Santa Paula man was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault Thursday after he returned to the scene to talk with the victim, the Santa Paula Police Department reported.
Heriberto Mejia, 30, was being booked into Ventura County Jail on multiple counts of sexual assault, police said in a statement. As of Thursday night, he had not been fully booked.
At 7:30 a.m., police were dispatched to the 100 block of West Santa Barbara Street after a man matching the description of a sexual assault suspect was seen in the area where the assault took place May 14, authorities said.
Police said Mejia fled when an officer attempted to detain him.
He was detained with help from a police dog. Authorities said the victim later identified Mejia as the man who had assaulted her.
In the statement, police said that during an interview Mejia admitted to the assault and said he had returned to talk with the victim.
