Zaragosa to run for Flynn's Supervisor seat

Oxnard City Councilman John Zaragoza is the first person to state definitively that he's going to run for 5th District Supervisor in 2008.

Zaragoza announced his candidacy in a prepared statement he released Thursday night.

It will be his second try at the seat that's been held for 30 years by Supervisor John Flynn. In 2004, Zaragoza finished third, narrowly missing a spot in the November runoff.

Zaragoza, 65, is in the midst of his third term on the City Council. He was Oxnard's director of solid waste until he retired in 1993, and he now owns real-estate and tax-preparation firms.

"We need a supervisor who can bring people together," Zaragoza said. "John (Flynn) has done a good job in his career. He's done his part and I think I can do my part."

But Zaragoza also said he wants to heal some of the "tension and dissension" on the Board of Supervisors, most of it revolving around Flynn, he said.

Over the years, Flynn has been in feuds with his fellow supervisors and with county workers.

Flynn said earlier this week that he plans on running for re-election but he hasn't completely made up his mind yet.

tmr3513, are you talking about zaragoza, flynn, or your husband. In either case, I feel for you because you are looking at this from one side, the wrong side. Flynn has done more for his community than any board member, mayor or founding brother has. Has he pissed some off, absolutely. Especially those that lost an envelope out of their back pocket.

radams-Roger Adams are you speaking for your mother-in-law Elizabeth Monitijo who works for Flynn? Or are you a puppet of Flynn's damage control team? Your right, Flynn has done more for the people of his community; just recently he has cost the people of El Rio 5 million dollars in sewer upgrade costs that the county could have paid for. This is due to his great relationship with his counterparts on the board of supervisors. Now the 5 million dollars can be spent everywhere else but Oxnard or El Rio. With a salary of $98,000 a year that Flynn gets paid, I expect you pick up the lost envelope and contribute it to the Dennis campaign, maybe he can use it to fix up the mess in El Rio.
