An entire page could be filled with names of the seminal musicians who either have called Topanga Canyon home or who love to perform in the rustic oasis just south of Woodland Hills.

But each summer for the past 34 years, the quiet, sparse community gets noisy and crowded with its annual Topanga Days celebration.

This year's three-day event, running Saturday through Memorial Day, features performances by Veruca Salt (5 p.m. Saturday), John Doe of the band X (3 p.m. Sunday), Venice (3 p.m. Monday) and the Young Dubliners (4:45 p.m. Monday).

There also will be lots more to shout about, from crafts sales to belly-dancing performances. There also will be a 10-kilometer run beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday and the annual Topanga Days Memorial Day Parade beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday. This year's parade theme is Topanga Goes to the Dogs.

Rick Provisor, the event's organizer, said Topanga Days is an ideal time for locals to visit their neighbors and for outsiders to enjoy a brief visit to the canyon he himself has cherished since leaving city life behind.

"It's like a family reunion," he said. "Some people who moved away come back just for Topanga Days. And it's an important event, because it's our one way to raise money to maintain our Community House."

Music has been a major component of Topanga Days since its inception.

Larger acts like Veruca Salt and the Young Dubliners appear on the main stage. Prominent local talent performs on the indoor stage, such as Merle Jagger (3:45 p.m. Saturday) and 29 Mules (4:45 p.m. Monday).

One of the most popular acts every year is the No Name Band. which will perform at 1 p.m. Monday.

"It's an all-star group made up of people from different bands," Provisor said. "This year the drummer will be Richie Hayward of Little Feat. Big names show up all the time to jam with the No Name Band so it's always worth checking out."

The No Name Band performs at 1 p.m. Monday. John Doe, who hits the stage at 3 p.m. Sunday, will have Pamela Des Barres as his special guest.

The other big draw at Topanga Days is the annual contemporary craft fair. Dozens of clothing and jewelry artisans will sell their wares.

"The last few years we got away from highlighting local artists, but we're back to that," Provisor said.

The traditional Memorial Day Parade begins at 9 a.m. on Monday, and this year's theme is "Topanga Goes to the Dogs."

No matter how big the event gets, Provisor still looks at Topanga Days as a community event. He's attended Topanga Days every year but one.

"It's more commercial now, but it's still special to those who live here," he said. "I started by going as a new resident, then I became a bartender for it. I keep taking on more responsibility. I may not get to really enjoy the activities because I'm working, but I get real joy out of how much fun everyone has."
