Ventura starts phone system to quickly tell of emergencies
Ventura officials Tuesday unveiled a high-speed telephone notification system to alert residents to emergencies.
The system, called CodeRED, will allow emergency personnel and city staff members to deliver a recorded message at a rate of up to 60,000 calls per hour.
A 20-second message could reach all 85,000 Ventura phone customers within 20 minutes, Fire Marshal Brian Clark said.
Officials urge people to add telephone numbers to the system's database, which uses data from the city's 911 telephone system.
All businesses should register, as well as individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, who have changed their phone number or address within the past year or who use a cellular phone as their primary phone.
To register, go to the city's Web site at http://www.cityofventura.net and follow the link to the "Emergency Preparedness" page.
Those without Internet access can call 658-4717 to give their information by phone. The information will be used only for emergency notification purposes and will not be shared, Clark said.

I hope they leave a message; I don't typically pick-up unless I know the caller.

Just another way for government to bypass personal freedom. Why do you think people have unlisted numbers?
Do you really want your phone numbers in a government database...that can be given to other government agencies...or sold to data-mining companies for telemarketers to access?
Not me!

this is such waste of money. If there is an emergency, you will find out anyway. Just hope it's not Casitas Dam breaking with the poor PA system in place.

I read somewhere that the phone numbers would not be sold or released to outside sources. Do I believe it? Probably not....... I'm already getting Sales calls on my cell phone and its pissing me off !!!!!!!! This should never be allowed !!!
