Rice talks freedom, foreign policy at Reagan Library
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Downer talked about freedom and foreign policy this morning at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.
The two foreign policy officials held a 45-minute closed-door meeting before giving remarks to an audience of about 450 in the Presidential Learning Center, which included former first lady Nancy Reagan.
The discussion ranged from diplomacy to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to how history will judge the Bush administration. They also took questions from the media and from the audience.
At the start of the morning, Rice and Downer sat in front of a fireplace beneath a framed embroidery of horses, given to Reagan by the president of South Korea.
In a brief exchange, they joked about a planned Thursday visit to Tesla Motors, an electric car company in the San Francisco Bay area.
Rice said that, “since I haven’t driven in about six years,” she thought it would be better if she didn’t get behind the wheel.
Downer remarked on the company’s electric car and its advertised ability to go from 0 to 60 mph in about four seconds.
“I have a motor racing license, which is unusual for somebody in my position,” he told Rice.
