Full shutdown to get project done quicker

The Arneill Road bridge over Highway 101 in Camarillo will be closed for at least a week in mid-June, requiring drivers to detour around it, officials say.

The bridge with four lanes plus a center turning lane will be closed because of a construction project at the intersection of Ventura Boulevard and Arneill. Workers will replace pavement and beautify the intersection.

The work will take two weeks, but city officials said they will try to keep some lanes of the bridge open during that period.

The exact dates of the bridge closure are not yet known.

In the "best-case scenario," the bridge will be closed only Monday through Friday of the first week, said Tom Fox, city director of public works.

During the second week, the bridge might have one lane open in each direction, Fox said. The bridge could be completely open both weekends during the project, he said.

The Camarillo City Council voted 5-0 this month to approve the bridge's closure. Without the council's agreement, the bridge would have remained open but the overall construction time would have stretched to six or seven weeks or possibly longer, Fox said.

At a recent meeting at the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce, about 20 members of the business community expressed their preference for the shorter two-week timetable, officials said.

"I think the businesses felt very positive" about the bridge closure, said Tom Kelley, president and CEO of the chamber.

Zach Bancroft, who owns Palermo Coffee on Ventura Boulevard, said he believes that the construction will benefit Old Town in the long run.

"Yeah, it'll affect it a little bit," he said of his business. But "we're going through some growing pains right now."

Armando Lozano, co-owner of Lumar Jewelry on Ventura Boulevard, said his business could lose revenue because customers do not want to deal with the hassle of driving near construction areas.

"Since we've been here the last two years, we've had to go through some hardships," he said, referring to construction in the area. "People don't like to travel where there's a lot of construction, but overall, I think we've done really well."

The two-week project is part of Old Town Phase 3 improvements. Fox said the work will include coloring the pavement in the middle of the intersection and the sidewalks.

While the bridge is closed, most traffic will detour to Lewis Road, he said. Some traffic will detour to Carmen Drive. Ventura Boulevard will remain open.
