The medical examiner testified Friday that the murder victim had four stab wounds, and the one that killed him pierced two major arteries.

County Chief Medical Examiner Ronald O'Halloran testified that the fatal stab wound went into the victim's upper chest, causing him to bleed internally.

O'Halloran testified in the trial of Estella Magana, who is charged with first-degree murder.

Magana, 53, is one of three co-defendants accused of killing Manuel Jesus Campos, 66.

The trial of co-defendant, Francisco "Flaco" Martinez, 41, is pending. The third co-defendant, Adelina Magana, 19, testified Thursday against her mother. In exchange for her testimony, prosecutors agreed to reduce the charge to voluntary manslaughter, a felony.

Closing arguments are expected Thursday or Friday.

Earlier, Ventura County Sheriff's Department Detective Randolph Watkins testified that while executing a search warrant on July 5, 2005, they found a large envelope from the medical examiner. Campos' personal belongings were in it, including his wallet. The envelope was in the trash can at the Oxnard house where the Maganas and Campos lived, according to Watkins.

During opening statements on Thursday, Estella Magana's lawyer, Joe Lax, told jurors that his client never wanted Campos killed.

She wanted Martinez to beat him up and scare him so he would stop being physically and sexually abusive toward her.

On July 4, 2005, Campos was at home when Estella Magana called her daughter, Adelina, and told her to lie to Campos and tell him her van broke down, according to testimony. Campos got battery jumper cables and drove to Olivas Park Drive. After he got out of his car, Campos was allegedly attacked by Martinez, who came out of the bushes.

Prosecutors also allege that Martinez struck Campos in the back of the head with a pipe.

Campos began fighting with Martinez, who pulled out a knife and stabbed Campos. Estella Magana claims she left the crime scene.

Adelina Magana claims she didn't know Campos was going to be killed when he went to help her mother, testimony showed.

Martinez, who was a homeless man who slept behind a trash bin in back of a Chevron gasoline station at Mills and Telegraph roads, met Estella Magana at the bar where she worked.

Martinez told people that he would do anything for Estella and Adelina Magana, testimony showed.

She drove away while her husband was being killed ! Did she even call the police? This pretty much looks like a guilty without a doubt case.

Can anyone tell me about Joe Lax? What kind of lawyer is he?
