Prelims today at four sites
Championships can't be won, but they can be lost today at the CIF-Southern Section track and field prelims.
The four section preliminary meets serve as qualifiers for the May 19 section finals.
Ten area schools are among the teams entered in the Division II Prelims at Moorpark High. The Division IV meet at Carpinteria draws entries from nine area programs.
The Division I and III meets will be held at Trabuco Hills and Warren, respectively.
Field events begin at 11 a.m. at all sites. The first running heats start at noon.
Among the athletes competing at Moorpark are Westlake's Cory Primm, who is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the 800-meter run, and Agoura boys' discus thrower Derek Johnson, who is No. 2 on the national list.
Rio Mesa, projected as one of the top three Division II boys' teams, will bring a large contingent that includes long jumper Josh Harrison and its state-ranked 4 x 100 relay team. Other teams entered at Moorpark include Camarillo, Hueneme, Moorpark, Newbury Park, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and Ventura.
The Division IV meet includes Oaks Christian, St. Bonaventure, Fillmore, La Reina, Santa Clara, Carpinteria, Thacher and Villanova.
Competing at the Division I meet are qualifiers from Buena, Royal, Oxnard, Pacifica and Channel Islands.
Oak Park, Santa Paula, Nordhoff and Calabasas are entered in the Division III meet.
