Prosecutors have decided to reduce to less serious felonies the charges against Christopher Perez, who is accused of chasing, cornering and beating a 14-year-old in March.

Bill Haney, the felony unit supervisor with the District Attorney's Office, said Tuesday that Perez will be charged with two felonies: assault with a deadly weapon with the special allegation of inflicting great bodily harm and battery with serious bodily injury.

Perez, 25, will be in court today to be arraigned on the new charges. He had been charged with attempted murder and using a deadly weapon against the boy.

Haney said Perez is being charged with the less serious felony charges because of new evidence submitted to the district attorney since the original filing in March.

Perez's lawyer, Philip Dunn, declined to comment.

Haney said Perez is facing up to nine years in prison if convicted on the latest felony charges. He is in custody with bail set at $510,000.

At a preliminary hearing last month, a judge ruled that there was sufficient evidence to hold Christopher Perez and his brother Gilbert to answer for the felony charges.

After the preliminary hearing, prosecutors decided to drop all criminal charges against Gilbert Perez, 29. Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Frawley had said the evidence against Gilbert Perez wasn't strong enough to pursue any criminal charges against him.

On March 20, the brothers chased the boy through two Oxnard-area mobile home parks, losing sight of him once before cornering him in a backyard. The brothers had caught the boy inside their mobile home after they returned from work, according to court testimony at the preliminary hearing.
