MLB notes: Mariners may demote Weaver
Mariners may demote Weaver
The Seattle Mariners will wait at least one more turn to get Felix Hernandez back into the rotation. Simi Valley High's Jeff Weaver will stay in it for now.
Hernandez strained his forearm on April 18. Weaver, 0-4 with an 18.26 ERA, will start at New York on Saturday. Manager Mike Hargrove said the Mariners met with Weaver this week and discussed options, which could include a demotion to the bullpen or even a designation for assignment, as the Angels did last season before Weaver went to World Series champion St. Louis.
Yankees fire conditioning coach: The New York Yankees fired their strength and conditioning coach following a rash of injuries to the pitching staff that has contributed to the team's poor start.
Marty Miller was hired by the Yankees in the offseason as director of performance enhancement. He had been with the club only a few months.
The 34-year-old Miller will be replaced on an interim basis by Dana Cavalea, who was Miller's assistant.
The latest injury came Tuesday, when top prospect Phil Hughes carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of his second major league start before a hamstring injury knocked him out of the game against the Texas Rangers. Hughes is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.
Langerhans traded for second time in week: Outfielder Ryan Langerhans was traded for the second time in a week, going from the Oakland Athletics to the Washington Nationals for outfielder Chris Snelling.
Braves call up Saltalamacchia: The Atlanta Braves called up catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia from Double-A Mississippi and started him against Philadelphia. Saltalamacchia is needed after starter Brian McCann bruised his finger and backup Brayan Pena went on the disabled list with concussion symptoms.
