Strawberry golf: River Ridge hosted the 21st annual Strawberry Classic on April 2. The field was limited to 88 players to accommodate a "Derby competition" that was held right after the tournament.
Winning the A flight with a gross score of 66 was course superintendent Kyle Kanny and his son Zack, a senior on the Ventura High golf team. Another father-son team, Jon and Rick Irwin, tied Mike Smith and Mogie Maraquin for second at 67.
Vince Jimenez paired with Louis Monroe to shoot a net 61 to win the A flight by a stroke over John Dorman and James Moore.
In the B flight, Mike Waller and Doyle Derr tied Dan Dolby and Mike Bloomer with net 58s.
Following the tournament, all 44 teams teed off in the Derby on three different holes using an alternate-shot format. After eliminating all but two teams from each flight, the finals came down to a two-hole shootout with the championship flight playing the blue tees and the other flights playing from the white tees.
Vince Jimenez and Louis Monroe, who won the A flight, managed to beat the field and take home the first-place prize.
Next year's event is planned for 36 holes over two days.
