Club at Oaks Christian plans May 19 dance to aid Darfur
Members of the Genocide Awareness Club from Oaks Christian High School are organizing a Dancing for Darfur fundraiser for 8 p.m. May 19 at the Westlake Hyatt Hotel.
The dance is for high school students in the Conejo Valley area and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to aid the suffering children in the Darfur region of Sudan.
Because of a limited amount of space, only 600 students will be admitted, with the cost of a ticket at $40. Students from Oaks Christian, Oak Park, Westlake, Agoura, Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park and La Reina high schools are invited.
Students must present their school IDs to purchase the tickets, which are now on sale. Ticket information for local sales is available via e-mail from samfiala423@msn.com.
The event is organized to raise money and awareness about the Sudanese people, who are currently experiencing a mass genocide in their homeland. An armed militia is accused of killing 450,000 people since 2003. The militia has also raped, enslaved, and starved their children.
Dancing for Darfur is organized by the Oaks Christian Genocide Awareness Club, which is composed of approximately 20 students, freshmen to seniors.
The goal is to raise $20,000.
Because the dance is not a school-sponsored activity, the club is seeking donations from individuals and corporate sponsors to provide all costs of the dance, including security, entertainment and refreshments.
Money raised from the dance will go to children in Darfur through the nonprofit organization Doctors without Borders.
