Man killed in 101 crash

A man died this morning in a solo car crash near the Ventura County line, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The man, whose name has not been released, was eastbound on Highway 101 just west of Lindero Canyon Road about 3 a.m. when his pickup truck drifted onto the right shoulder and hit a pole, then a tree, said Officer Brian DeNike. The vehicle then burst into flames.

The driver was dead by the time Los Angeles Fire Department personnel extinguished the blaze.

CHP officials were not able to determine whether he died from the impact of the crash or the flames that followed, DeNike said.

It is also unclear if the man was wearing a seat belt, he added.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office this morning had not identified the man, who appears to have been in his 30s or 40s.
