Eleven trash bin fires reported

Oxnard Fire Department kept busy

Within two hours, 11 trash bins were set on fire early Sunday morning in Oxnard, fire officials said.

No property damage was reported, but the trash bins were set ablaze across the city, from 3 to 5 a.m.

"One minute, we were in the south end of the city, and two minutes later, we were in the north end," said Sgt. Andrew Salinas with the Oxnard Police Department.

The police assisted the Oxnard Fire Department, which reported no injuries, but the fires ate up fire department resources for several hours, said Battalion Chief Darwin Base.

"They're more nuisance calls," he said.

Base said a person recently released from jail went on a similar trash bin rampage. However, it was unclear on Sunday if it was one or multiple people who set the fires that spanned three districts in the city.

Fire and police officials are investigating, but there was little evidence to point to anyone, Base said.

"If they don't leave anything behind, like graffiti, there's nothing we can do," Base said.

The fires could have been started by someone riding a bike or walking, Base said. None of the fires threatened any structures.

That comment wasn't so nice jjp432. I don't relish Oxnard much either and I live there.

Hindsight is 20/20!
The dumpster torchers are beginner terrorists. Hope they are caught and taught a lesson.

Things like these trash fires are a cost that the citizen pay, the fire department has to run to these and waste time. If they should be running to a trash fire and not get to a house fire on time then the trash fire become more of a problem.
So many of these my be kids with too much time on there hands, they should be caught and put to some work cleaning up a real mess, they they might just learn that that fun is no longer fun

On the upside, that's 11 trash cans full of trash that WILL NOT go into a landfill.

Glass half-full!

It is 11 trash cans that will not go into the landfill, but it's 11 trash cans full of smoke (possibly toxic) that has gone into our air.

Unfortunately, the way Oxnard has been boarding up business slated for demolition, I am surprised that there haven't been more lovely incidents as such here. We have the Wagon Wheel project, the Carriage Square Project, the Nyeland Acres project and the Skyview Project to further beautify this nice place to live. It would be so nice if projects were started as soon as they were started rather then left in suspended animation as they seem to be. The result is like that of the great cities of Detroit and Buffalo. Slums. We will soon have the Kmart project as well, not forgetting the Hughes Market/Oxnard Swapmeet spectacular.
