Oak View man killed in car wreck
An Oak View man, who was a passenger in a pickup truck, was killed in an early morning accident Saturday in Ventura, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Diego Mercado, 19, was pronounced dead at Ventura County Medical Center. The driver, Eduardo Mercado, 38, survived with minor injuries. It was not clear whether the two are related.
Eduardo Mercado, also of Oak View, was making the transition from Highway 101 southbound to Highway 126 about 6:50 a.m. when he lost control of his truck. The truck veered across the transition road and eventually rolled down an embankment.
Diego Mercado, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected onto the Highway 126 East Main Street onramp, according to the CHP.
Eduardo Mercado, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura but was released.

Diego was a life long friend to my Son,,always quick to laugh, with a smile a mile long,he once backed down from a dare to jump from the top spot at the Sespe Punch Bowls. Diego loved hiking, jumping into pools of water, camping and being with his Family and many friends, who will miss him.God has another Angel in Heaven.

I am very sorry about Diego's death. I was there by his side, shortly after the accident, keeping his airway open and ensuring he had a pulse until help arrived. Oh how I wish this tragedy would have never happenned! There is a God and you will see him in Heaven again!

I would not start driving until my passengers put on their seatbelts. People need to realize how important seatbelts are. Also, buckle in your pet. I saw a guy driving on Rose Ave. a couple days ago with his little dog hanging out the window on the driver's side - obviously sitting on the driver's lap?????

I went to high school with Diego. He was an awesome person who would make anyone laugh with his gentle kindness. He had a good heart and a whole soul. This is very unfortunate, tragic. To everyone out there, please buckle up. It's so simple. Just do it for your own good. Diego, you will be dearly missed. You are in a better place now though, with God. I send my prayers and thoughts to the family, with time, things will gradually get better. Once again, I am so sorry for your loss.
Diego, we will miss you.
