Some gift ideas for do-it-yourself dads

Here are some hot ideas on new home products that might make Father's Day Sunday a little more special.

Safety at home is everyone's responsibility, and here's one gift that is actually for the whole family.

Firefighters recommend that all homes have several working smoke alarms. First Alert recently introduced the OneLink system of smoke detectors, which will sound all the alarms inside the home if just one alarm detects smoke.

Add the battery-operated OneLink alarm to each bedroom, then replace your older 120-volt hall alarm with a 120-volt OneLink alarm to protect the entire house. Available at home stores nationwide or at http://www.firstalert.com.

A fire extinguisher for the kitchen or workshop is a gift that any father would welcome. Consumer complaints about being intimidated by traditional fire extinguishers led to the development of the more familiar design of the Tundra fire extinguisher.

This new design resembles typical spray cans, and can be stored in a cabinet or drawer close to kitchen stoves and workshop power tools. The extinguisher has a wide spray nozzle to cover a wide surface area and is approved for paper, fabric, wood, cooking oil and electrical fires.

Please remember that in case of a fire, you should call 911 before attempting to extinguish a fire, and should quickly evacuate your house. Learn more about Tundra at http://www.firstalert.com.

I have worked on home repair and shop projects all my life and never knew how useful an air compressor could be until I received one as a gift. Now I use my air compressor to fill tires, clean sawdust off tools and for power nailers. I often leave the compressor plugged in so I have a ready supply of air, but the constant restart due to air leaks is annoyingly loud. To the rescue is the Quiet Series 19-gallon horizontal air compressor by Husky.

When set to light-duty compression, the Quiet Series operates at only 73 decibels, much less noise than similar models. Do dad a favor and to protect his hearing and his nerves, consider the Quiet Series air compressor. It's available at Home Depot and other home supply stores for $199.

Cordless drills are often favorite gifts, and with the new lithium-ion battery technology, cordless power tools now deliver more power and hold their charge much longer than the old nickel-based battery tools.

Ridgid tools are a step above the run-of-the-mill DIY tools and are often a favorite of contractors. The 18-volt compact Ridgid cordless drill is a welcomed gift and weighs only 4.25 pounds.

The compact design is the key to the tool's light weight, but the power of an 18-volt motor is there for more aggressive projects.

Also, Husky has introduced a 45-piece "Stubby" ratchet, wrench and screwdriver set with a lifetime warranty.

Stubby is packaged in a handy clear plastic storage case containing a flexible handle 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch socket wrench (no adapter needed), 13 standard sockets and 14 metric sockets of the most common sizes used for repairing furniture, appliances and powered lawn equipment.

There is also a high-torque ratcheting Stubby screwdriver with 10 bits, three Phillips, three slotted, two hex and two star bits and a Stubby adjustable wrench.

All of this goes for $15, and the whole package fits easily in a kitchen drawer or glove compartment. It's available at Home Depot and other home supply stores.
