MDR/XDR TB facts

MDR TB, or multi-drug-resistant TB, is a strain of the disease that is resistant to at least two of the best anti-TB drugs. People who don't take their medication regularly or don't finish their treatment can develop MDR TB. Those with MDR TB also can pass on that strain of infection.

XDR TB is extensively drug-resistant TB, a rare type of MDR TB that is resistant to first- and second-line treatments, leaving fewer and less-effective treatment options. XDR TB can be contracted in the same way as MDR TB.
