Track and field

Rio Mesa's Hedgepeth earns gold as anchor

Rio Mesa High sophomore Saraina Hedgepeth completed her 2007 season by winning a gold medal on the 400 intermediate relay team at the National Junior Olympics at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut.

Hedgepeth was the anchor leg and the Together Elite team of Ashley Woodford, Jessica Davis and Breyonna Hunter turned a time of 46.16 seconds. The girls started competing together after the CIF finals.

Golf

Knights of Columbus tournament Aug. 27

The Simi Valley Knights of Columbus Council No. 5803 will hold its annual charity Golf Tournament at Wood Ranch Country Club in Simi Valley on Monday, Aug. 27.

The public is invited to participate in the shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.

The cost is $125 per player before Sunday and $135 thereafter. The fee includes 18 holes of golf, cart, range balls, contests on the course, team photo and a barbecue lunch and awards presentation.

Running

Sweatheart relay scheduled for Sept. 3

The 25th annual Sweatheart 10K relay will take place Monday, Sept. 3, at 8 a.m. at the Ventura Pier.

The race will have women run a flat 5K and hand the baton to their male partner, who will run the same 5K. Age groups are formed by adding the partners ages together.

Pre-registration is $20 per couple, race-day registration is $23 per couple. Runners 18 and under may run for $5 each.
