Camarillo's Josh Ford leads Santa Maria sprints

Camarillo's Josh Ford captured the 30-lap Bandit/Ventura Racing Association sprint car feature at Santa Maria Speedway on Saturday night.

The victory pushed Ford into a tie with Ventura's Greg Taylor for the standings lead with 224 points apiece.

Greg Porte of San Luis Obispo finished second after surviving a crash that knocked Santa Maria's Danny Sheridan out of the runner-up spot. Sheridan finished 16th after leaving the track on the 29th lap.

Ventura's Jimmy Crawford was third. Davey Pombo of Kerman finished fourth and Taylor was fifth.

Sprint cars will return to Ventura Raceway on Aug. 25 along with the senior sprint cars.

The Ventura County Fair races will be Wednesday and Thursday, highlighted by a demolition derby each night and a variety of racing classes. Racing both nights will start at 6 p.m.

Irwindale update: Rip Michels won his 52nd career feature Saturday night at Irwindale Speedway in the 50-lap AC Delco Super Late Models. Simi Valley's Andrew Phipps was third behind Burbank's Dan Moore.

Santee's Matt Hicks won the King Taco Super Trucks feature, edging John Israel of Simi Valley.

Covina's Greg Crutcher prevailed in the Vista Paint Super Stocks. San Bernardino's Darren Cheek was second and Camarillo's Julianne Seeley was seventh. Tim Skoglund of Fresno won the Ford Focus Midgets feature and Mike Maier of Haywood was second.

This Saturday at Irwindale will be Dodger Baseball Appreciation Night as the Auto Club Late Models, Justice Brothers Mini Stocks, Legend Cars, Ford Focus Midgets and demolition derby highlight the card.
