The Eagles Soccer Club of Camarillo earned the Laura Moynihan Cup on Sunday with a 3-2 win over the Dallas Texans 90 Red team in the United States Youth Soccer under-17 championship at Frisco, Texas.
It was the Eagles' second national championship since winning the under-14 title in 2004.
The Eagles were 3-1 in the tournament, scoring 11 goals and allowing four. The Eagles had lost to the Texans 2-1 in a pool-play game on Friday.
The Eagles took flight early with a goal from Emily Cressy in the 15th minute. Cressy added a second goal in the 45th minute.
Nicole Sweetman collected the rebound after a shot by Amanda Lisberger and scored in the 57th minute to give the Eagles a 3-1 advantage.
"This is the match we have been looking forward to since U14, the one we have trained for," said Eagles coach Vince Thomas. "These are the two best teams in the country and I can't describe it."
"I just wanted to win for the team. I didn't really think about myself. I just wanted us to win as a team and be the No. 1 team in the nation," said Cressy, who took home her second adidas Golden Boot award for the tournament's best player.
Fourteen Eagles have made college commitments. They are midfielder Megan Blankenburg, Fresno State; midfielder Cressy, Kansas; fullback Sidney Garza, St. Mary's; midfielder Courtney Goodson, Texas; striker Samantha Greene, Northwestern; midfielder Chloe Johnson, Kansas; striker Lisberger, Texas; goalie Shaine Millhesier, Texas; midfielder Kelsey Owen, Dayton; striker Ashley Owens, Tennessee; sweeper Kaitlin Paletta, California; sweeper Kelsea Smith, Pepperdine; striker Sweetman, UCLA; and fullback Haley Wilson, Oregon.
