Training offered for self-employed

Women's Economic Ventures will hold a series of free self-employment training orientations in Oxnard, Ventura and Thousand Oaks. Participants can learn more about the 14-week comprehensive course that teaches how to start or grow a successful business.

Oxnard orientations are Aug. 8, 15, 22 and 29, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Oxnard College, 4000 S. Rose Ave.

Ventura orientations are Aug. 7 and 14, from 6 to 7 p.m. at 4667 Telegraph Road, Ventura, and Aug. 21 and 28, from 6 to 7 p.m. at 71 Day Road, Ventura.

Thousand Oaks orientations are Aug. 6, 13, 20 and 27, from 6 to 7 p.m. Location to be announced.

FedEx official to speak to chamber

Learn about the challenges businesses face at the Thousand Oaks-Westlake Village Regional Chamber of Commerce's Networking Breakfast of Champions from 7 to 9 a.m. Friday at the Los Robles Greens Banquet Center, 299 S. Moorpark Road.

Speaker Frank Maguire will discuss how to deal with management, customer and employee challenges. Maguire is one of the nation's leading authorities on corporate culture, leadership, customer service, productivity and communications.

As the first senior vice president of Industrial Relations for FedEx, Maguire is the creator of the corporate culture that helped make the company a multibillion dollar success.

Before working at FedEx, Maguire was head of program development at ABC Radio Network. He has served as director of marketing and public relations for American Airlines, and he is a former vice president at Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Prepaid reservations are due by 2 p.m. Thursday. The fee for chamber members is $18 and $23 for nonmembers. The fee at the door is $27. Registration begins at 6:45 a.m. For more information, go to www.towlvchamber.org.
