Residence unsafe to stay in after fire starts on stove top

A fire left a Moorpark residence uninhabitable Thursday after the blaze ignited on a stove top, the Ventura County Fire Department reported.

The fire was reported about 9:25 a.m. at a single-family residence in the 14000 block of Hartford Street.

When firefighters arrived, a concerned neighbor expressed fear that someone could still be inside. A search showed that nobody was home, said Capt. Barry Parker.

The fire was knocked down by 9:38 a.m. Further details, such as a damage estimate, were not available.

Parker said the fire caused "major smoke damage throughout the home," and it was red-tagged and considered unsafe to stay in.
