Simi Boy Scout heading to World Jamboree
A Simi Valley Boy Scout will join fellow scouts from all over the world Friday at the 21st World Jamboree in England.
Kevin Callaway, 15, and two others from his Troop 633 are flying to the convention where more than 40,000 scouts will come together to swap scouting and cultural experiences.
The international jamboree occurs once every four years with the goal of encouraging peace through scouting. This year's theme is "One World, One Promise," and the event is scheduled to last 2 1/2 weeks.
Callaway, who has been a scout for eight years and expects to become an Eagle Scout by summer's end, said the event is a tremendous opportunity. "It's definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
Callaway is one of seven scouts from the Ventura County area attending the jamboree. He and his troop mates are paying for the entire trip through fundraising and help from parents.
Callaway said he's enjoyed his experience as a scout and expects this to be icing on the cake.
"My leadership skills have developed greatly, and it's given me a better moral ethic," he said.
