MARTIAL ARTS

SASAKI STUDENTS EARN MEDALS

The Team Sasaki students, based in Oxnard and coached by 10-time World Champion Jody Sasaki, competed at a regional karate tournament in Grover Beach. The tournament, which is designed mainly for non-black belt competitors, gave Team Sasaki students valuable competition experience. "For this tournament we sent only under belt competitors. It was a little bit smaller and less stressful. Perfect environment to get experience for larger events," said Michael Sharma, a Team Sasaki trainer. Leading the way for Team Sasaki was 14-year-old brown belt Jessica Sumalpong. Sumalpong, from Camarillo, brought home a gold medal in creative weapons, a silver in traditional weapons and a bronze in traditional forms. Also bringing home gold was brown belt Andrea Mallul and green belt Arlene Bucio. Mallul, a sophomore at Rio Mesa High, earned her win in sparring. Meanwhile, Bucio, 8, placed first in a very large traditional forms division. Bringing home silver medals were Ignacio Bucio and Ignacio Bucio Jr. Next up for Team Sasaki will be the Duel in the Desert, a national tournament in Las Vegas. Making this August tournament even more special is the fact it is hosted by Team Sasaki. The tournament will take place Aug. 3-4 at the Tuscany Hotel and Suites. Information: 981-4333.
