Suspect enters plea in death of girlfriend
A 23-year-old Oxnard man on Thursday pleaded not guilty to murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend, who was allegedly stabbed after an argument in May.
Uriel Cruz, 23, can't be released on bail because there is a federal deportation hold on him. He was arrested May 11.
After the arraignment, prosecutor Rebecca Day said in an interview that Cruz is also accused of using a weapon — a knife — in the commission of a crime.
Ventura County Superior Court Judge Kevin McGee set a hearing for this case for Sept. 21.
Barbarita Luna, 25, of Ventura was stabbed multiple times in the chest, police said. She was found dead in his car, officials said.
Cruz was taken into custody by Los Angeles County sheriff's Department deputies in Calabasas on May 11, less than two hours after police officers went to the parking lot of a Target store on Main Street in Ventura, shortly after 7:30 a.m., in response to a report of an altercation near a vehicle there.
Ventura police did not find the vehicle or the subjects, but said they found evidence of a crime. The events ended after Cruz's family members urged him to turn himself in, police said. Cruz, who had been driving around in a car, called deputies.

Stabbed multiple times in the chest. Plead not guilty. It was probably an accident. He may have slipped in oil.
