Fake firearms trigger lockdown at Buena High

A lockdown initiated at Buena High School in Ventura on Wednesday morning was called off when a student who brought gun replicas to campus turned himself in to school authorities, police said.

Police surrounded the school about 10:30 a.m. after they received a report of a gun spotted on the campus at 5607 Telegraph Road, said Sgt. Jack Richards of the Ventura Police Department.

A student who had brought two fake weapons to school went to the principal after he spotted police officers on school grounds and realized they might be looking for him.

Police arrested the student and confiscated two airsoft pistols, Richards said.

The fake weapons shoot plastic pellets and look "very real," the sergeant said.

Officers also recovered a knife.

The boy was cited and released to his parents.

Ventura police and schools train to respond to incidents of this kind, Richards said. Officers spent part of last week at Balboa Middle School learning to deal with campus incidents.

"This incident went down smoothly," he said.
