Steaming Summer event at rail museum in Goleta
Two days of live steam railroading and a circus-theme setting await visitors to the South Coast Railroad Museum this weekend.
The occasion is the 21st anniversary of the Steaming Summer event at the historic Goleta Depot, 300 N. Los Carneros Road, Goleta.
Steaming Summer is the Railroad Museum's only two-day event. Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Steaming Summer draws its name from the miniature steam-powered locomotives that make a once-a-year visit to the museum to pull the trains of the Goleta Short Line, carrying young and old around the museum grounds at Lake Los Carneros Park.
A highlight this year will be the expanded train ride, which is now almost half a mile long. A complete trip takes about nine minutes. Another event highlight will be a circus train, containing several cars from the collection of Ted Cheesman of Carpinteria. Event attendees will be able to ride the circus train, as well as the other trains operating over the weekend.
The $4-per-day admission ($3 after 3 p.m.) includes unlimited train rides. Rides will be offered throughout the day, with the steam locomotives going out of service about 3:30 p.m. Free rides on the museum handcar also will be available.
The train and handcar rides are suitable for both adults and children. Those who do not meet the 34-inch minimum-height requirement for the miniature train will be admitted free to the event. Handcar riders must be at least 48 inches tall.
Tri-tip sandwiches, hot dogs, soft drinks and other refreshments will be available for purchase.
