There are still vacancies for kids 8-16 to participate in the Ventura Yacht Club's summer youth sailing program. Sessions run weekly through Aug. 17.
This program is open to the public as parental yacht club membership is not required. Class sizes are small (maximum of 16), with an emphasis on individual attention. Depending on skill level, kids sail solo or double-handed in well-maintained/equipped 8-foot Sabots and/or 14-foot Lasers. All are welcome
Robert Campana, a U.S. Sailing Certified Instructor, is once again leading the program. As was the case last summer, Tyler Young, a longtime VYC Junior Sailor is assisting him. Both are certified in first aid/CPR and in addition to being experienced sailing instructors who have previously participated in the state's Junior Lifeguard Program.
Sessions run from 8:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday and incorporate both on-land and on-the-water activities. Students must be able to swim, and need to bring a life jacket, a light jacket or windbreaker, a towel, a change of clothes and a sack lunch (including drink). Closed-toed sneakers or "water socks/shoes" are required. Classes are $155 per week.
To sign up or obtain more information, go to www.venturayachtclub.org or call either VYC at 642-0426.
