T.O. All-Stars earn return trip to World Series

Matt Bywater pitched a three-hitter over six innings and Garrett Rau earned the save Tuesday to lead the Thousand Oaks Big League Baseball All-Stars to a 2-1 victory over Northern California champion Cameron Park in the West Region Tournament championship game in Bremerton, Wash.

Reigning World Series champion Thousand Oaks (8-0) will play in the Big League Little League World Series for the fourth time in five years beginning Saturday in Easley, S.C. Thousand Oaks will play its first game on Saturday at 10 a.m. against the East champion.

Stephen Notaro of Thousand Oaks will be in the home run derby competition Friday night as part of the Fan Fest celebration at the J.B. "Red" Owens Sports Complex.

Bywater (4-0) registered six strikeouts, while walking four and allowing an unearned run in the first inning. Cameron Park's Spencer Williams had a single and scored on Bywater's throwing error.

Trailing 1-0, Thousand Oaks rallied in the top of the second inning. Mike Schwartz walked and Anthony Montenegro followed with a double. Jason Barmasse had an RBI single and a groundout by Kyle Jones produced the winning run.

Rau allowed a one-out double to Williams in the bottom of the seventh. Rau ended the game by an inducing a groundout and a fly ball to center field to bring on the regional championship celebration.

"We're excited to have a chance to defend the World Series title," said coach Matt Ricato. It was T.O.'s second victory over Cameron Park in two days. Thousand Oaks earned a 2-1 win on Monday to advance to the championship game.

Cameron Park sent Hawaii home with a 5-2 victory earlier Tuesday morning. Hawaii defeated Nevada champion Central Las Vegas 8-7 on Monday afternoon. Hawaii and Northern California played one inning Monday evening, but the game was suspended because the Kitsap Blue Jackets had a game Monday evening in the Western Collegiate Baseball League at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton.

In the championship game, Thousand Oaks had only seven hits. Montenegro contributed two sacrifice bunts.

The other Thousand Oaks players are Andres Ceja, Jake Fiss, Collin Lavoie, Ty Muller, Tyler Peddicord, Zack Thornton and Ben Yarin. Thousand Oaks, the Southern California State champion, has outscored the opposition 58-11 in its eight wins.

The manager is Ed Kitchen. Mike Sheehan and Ricato are coaches. John A. Short III is the president of Thousand Oaks Little League.

"We're going to the Big Show," said Short. "When we go out on the field, we're feared by everyone. Off the field, we're loved by everyone. "These guys are stewards of the community, representing our city of Thousand Oaks and Ventura County. We're received positive comments about the players from fans in Bellflower (SoCal Tournament) and Washington (regionals)."

Fick and Notaro will be playing in their third Big League World Series in South Carolina. Barmasse, Jones, Peddicord, Rau and Yarin are returning to the World Series.

The World Series championship game on Aug. 4 will be televised live by ESPN and shown at 10 a.m. PDT.
