Michael Wellesley, 16, of Oxnard received his Eagle Scout award in a court of honor ceremony June 23 at the First Presbyterian Church in Oxnard. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 228.

The award was presented by Vince DeYoung, former scoutmaster of Troop 228, sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church. Other participants in the ceremony were Ventura County Supervisor John Flynn, Tony Valencia, the Rev. Ted Brandt, Mike Hickinbotham, Mike Sixbey, John Slagboom and Jered Gritters. Scouts who participated in the program were Nick Vasiloff, Matthew Wellesley, Michael Phelps, Kyle Eckhart, John Slagboom, Bosi Gonzales, Matthew Dominy, Greg Benninger, Taylor Waters, Caleb Yee, Lino Cantos and Ryan Reynolds.

Wellesley started scouting as a Bear Cub Scout in 1999 in Pack 3251 in Oxnard. As a Webelos, Wellesley completed the Arrow of Light and bridged to Boy Scout Troop 228 in 2002.

He earned 30 merit badges and served his troop as assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, senior patrol leader and instructor. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow and was selected as Troop 228 Scout of the Year for 2005.

Wellesley participated in five summer camps, earned the Mile Swim and 50-Miler patches, the Eagle Bronze Palm, completed wilderness first aid training and participated in numerous backpacking trips in the Sierras, Los Padres National Forest and the Mojave National Preserve. He hiked more than 460 miles, camped 90 nights and performed more than 160 hours of community service as a scout. He plans to continue to serve the troop as instructor and junior assistant scoutmaster.

For his Eagle project, Wellesley led a crew of 33 volunteers in creating a memorial at Fremont Intermediate School for Ethel Hayman, a former teacher in Oxnard School District who was killed two years ago.

Wellesley is a junior at Oxnard High School.

He is the son of Alan and Robin Wellesley of Oxnard.
