California Open sets qualifying dates
The California State Open Championship, the oldest professional golf championship in California, has announced qualifying dates for the 2007 tournament.
Four local qualifying sites will round out the field of 144 players vying for the title when the championship gets under way Sept. 25-29 at Redhawk Golf Club in Temecula.
The 2007 qualifying sites include: The PGA of Southern California Golf Club (The Champions Course) in Beaumont on Aug. 6, Rio Hondo Country Club in Downey on Aug. 20, Redhawk Golf Club on Sept. 10 and Temecula Creek Inn on Sept. 17.
The qualifying fee will be $150 and is open to professionals and amateur golfers with a verifiable index of 4.4 or less. Entries are available at www.scpga.com.
Scholarship winner: The River Ridge Senior Men's Golf Club awarded its first $1,000 scholarship to Hueneme High graduate Maxine Holland.
Holland, who played for the Hueneme golf team, graduated with a 4.71 GPA. She will attend Stanford this fall.
Holland received a similar award from the Buenaventura Senior Men's Golf Club.
Hole-in-one report: John Stiles scored his first hole in one on the 136-yard 11th hole at Buenaventura Golf Course. Stiles, 11, who has been playing golf for only a year, used a 3-iron. It was witnessed by Amber Swartz and James Gibbons.
Dale Birdsong of Newbury Park aced Westlake Golf Course's 145-yard seventh hole using a 5-iron. It was his first career hole in one. It was witnessed by Dave Mueller, Grant DeSmet and Ray LePage.
Marshall Matz of Westlake Village scored his fourth career hole in one on the 119-yard eighth hole at Los Robles. His shot was witnessed by Ed Viggers, Skip Gregg and Brian Jacobson.
Scott Hopkins scored his second career ace, when he holed out on the 100-yard, seventh hole at Tierra Rejada. Hopkins used a wedge.
Drew Fox sank a hole in one on the 169-yard ninth hole at Lake Lindero Golf Club. Fox used a 5-iron and his shot was witnessed by Ernesto Gallo and Tucker Munro.
Alex Mora made a hole in one on the 170-yard third hole at the Vineyard Golf Course at River Ridge, using a 5-iron.
Verhulst wins title: Corrine Verhulst won the the Los Robles Greens Women's Golf Club Championship with a low gross score of 254 after 54 holes. Verhulst bested Joan Nelson, who had a gross 264. Sheila Ryan won low net with a 224.
Terri Tallen was the low-gross winner in Flight 2 at 284, followed by Mary Kestly at 314. Barbara O'Connell was the low-net winner at 219.
