Fire breaks out at Wagon Wheel
A fire was reported just before 6 p.m. tonight at the Wagon Wheel, a landmark in Oxnard.
An Oxnard Fire Department dispatcher said eight engines were being sent to the area, which was developed by the late real estate magnate Martin V. Smith but is now largely vacant.
The Star reported late last year that many industrial tenants had pulled up stakes, anticipating demolition. The Wagon Wheel motel and restaurant, which Smith launched, are closed.
Oxnard Village Investments, based in Newport Beach, wants to redevelop the area with housing and commercial space.

Yep! Here we go again! The transition period in which the slated for demolition site becomes the haven for arson and graffiti. And, yes, we will have to endure the long dormancy of dilapidated scenery which further beautifies "The City That Cares"! So many started projects here have been dormant for too long. And I know this will be removed as it will offend someone out there who cannot stand the truth.

Yes indeed! Dormacy brings crime and vandalism. Many cities will hold the owner accountable for keeping the property clean and vandal free until the facility is leveled...why not the city that cares? Oxnard can make a big difference by targeting such longtime abandoned & vacant facilities; use it or level it. Seen this done by other municipalities with good results.

I agree, glammi and Ventura22. And, the worst of all this is the further tarnishing of an already tarnished city name, the byproduct of neglect. Oh, slkrchck, I drove by Hughes and they are actually working on it and the Pic-N-Save is home to the soon Office Depot.

Where have you guys been, actually there's already something proposed there. Two condo towars that are going to dwarf the topa financial center, also a school, shopping, transit system. So this fire sounds like it's actually going to speed the process of getting this project started! I wonder if this fire was done on purpose , I mean since there's been discussions on turning that motel into a historic monument (dumb idea I think) but I guess the fire took care of that dilemma!
