The Oxnard Mermaids Girls Softball League

won the championship

RESULTS — Mermaids 16, Bayou Storm 1; Mermaids 6, SWA 4; Mermaids 9, Silver Bullets 5 (championship). Pool play: Mermaids 6, Bayou Storm 1; Mermaids 10, Silver Bullets 2; Mermaids 14, SWA All-Stars 1; Mermaids 12, Bayou Storm 0; Mermaids 4, SWA All-Stars 0, Mermaids 10, Silver Bullets 0. Note: Mermaids finished 9-0, winning third national championship. The Mermaids won national titles in 2005 and 2002.

BASEBALL

CAMARILLO PONY ROSTER — The Camarillo 14-year-old all-stars won the Section Tournament championship at Newbury Park. The players are John Bain, Cameron Custance, Dean James Drulius, Mark Fitzgerald, Taylor Hansen, Danny McCarthy, Ryan Pettit, Aaron Roth, Nathan Roth, Brandon Santana, Blake Steele, Kyle Villa, Bryce Wilson and Evan Quinn. Dean Drulius is the manager. Rich Fitzgerald and Ken Villa are coaches.

SIMI YOUTH ROSTER — The 14-year-old Simi Youth League all-stars were second in the Section Tournament. Those players are Tyler Abbott, Chad Avena, Jake Conlin, Joe DeFlavio, Jacob Franklin, Jason Franklin, Ydmar Gomez, Scott Hockenberry, Ryan Knight, Corey Lavallee, Rocky Morales, Nolan Reed, Levi Shordon, Ryan Tinkham and Jake Woolley. The team was coached by John Abbott and Howard Hockenberry. The Simi Youth finished the season 13-1 and seven of the Simi players (Abbott, Conlin, Jason Franklin, Hockenberry, LaVallee, Shordon and Tinkham) were members of the 13-year-old World Series finalist team in Chino Hills last summer. This summer, Simi outscored the opposition 128-20.

SIMI YOUTH SUCCESS — The Simi Youth League 13-year-old all-stars advanced to the PONY West Zone Tournament in Fullerton. The boys are a tournament championship away from playing in the World Series at Chino Hills. The players are Nick Vigo, Cody Ramer, Cole Acheronti, Sean Houlihan, Colin Yelich, Blake Yuckert, Johnny Wilson, Reese Schmidt, Tyler Bosson, Jeremy Sworzyn, Brandon Geiger and Cole Rutherford, Las Virgenes Invitational: SYB 30, Toluca 0; SYB 18, Thousand Oaks 2; SYB 12, Santa Barbara 2; SYB 12, Westlake 2 (semifinal); SYB 10, Newbury Park 2 (championship). West Hills Section: SYB 4, West Hills 3; SYB 18, SYB B 1; SYB 13, Sylmar 3; SYB 13, Mid Valley 1; SYB 16, SYB B 7 (semifinal); West Hills 11, SYB 6 (championship). Hart Region: SYB 16, Santa Ynez 0; SYB 13, Heartwell 7; SYB 9, Charter Oak 6 (semifinal); SYB 15, Glendora 4 (championship). Simi Youth is 14-1 overall. Houlihan has hit nine homers, Yelich three, Acheronti three, Bosson two, Yuckert two, Ramer one and Rutherford one. The Simi team has outscored the opposition 205-52. In the opening zone game, Simi defeated Tustin 13-5. Ramer recorded seven strikeouts in four innings and Wilson pitched the final inning. Rutherford had a triple and drove in three runs. Ramer had two hits and two RBIs. Six others had key hits and drove in runs. Simi dropped a 4-3 decision to Chandler, Ariz., in seven innings. Wilson pitched four innings and registered three strikeouts. Schmidt pitched the final three innings. Yelich had an RBI triple and Houlihan drove in a run. Ramer, Yuckert and Rutherford had hits. With the loss, Simi must win five games in a row to advance to the World Series in Chino Hills. Information: www.ponynrc.org.

SECTION RESULTS — The Orcutt National 9-10-year-old Little Leaguers swept Dos Pueblos 3-2 and 6-5 for the Section 1 Tournament championship at Sherwood Park in Paso Robles.

SATICOY DROPS PAIR — The Saticoy Junior League All-Stars lost to South Pasadena 17-7 in the Southern California State Tournament in Palmdale. Drew Jacobs hit a homer and Eric Flores had two hits. In Sunday's 15-14 elimination-game loss to La Mirada, Flores had three hits. Jacob Gomez had five hits, including a homer. Jacobs had a single and homer. Tyler Rodarte had three hits, including a homer. Flores had five hits in the tournament. Jacobs had six hits and Rodarte had four.

SIMI WINS PAIR

Simi Wildfire won two games in pool play at the Valley Christian Athletic Association Tournament. The Simi Valley Cal Ripken Major Division All-Stars earned two wins, defeating Encino 5-4 and Woodland Hills 10-0.

In the first game against Encino, Jonah White recorded the win allowing a run over three innings on two hits while registering six strikeouts. Spencer Dubaich pitched well and helped the offense with two solo home runs, including the game winner. Logan Bateman recorded the save with a solid pitching effort. Bateman also aided the offense with two singles and an RBI. Colton Follett had two singles and a stolen base. Parker Meintzer hit a solo home run and scored twice. Skylar Smutny and Travis White each singled and played well on defense.

In the second game against Woodland Hills, Spencer Dubaich recorded the win allowing no runs on two hits and six strikeouts over three innings. Zack Kosinski played solid at catcher throwing out a base runner. Will Noethens also played solid at catcher completing a tag play at the plate to preserve the shutout. Joe Cummings recorded four RBIs on two singles. Noethens and Bryan Chiarappa each recorded two singles and Kosinski hit an RBI single to key the Wildfire offense. Solid defensive plays and strong pitching contributed to the successful pool play victories. Seeding for the elimination games that start on Saturday await the completion of pool-play games later this week.

VOLLEYBALL

National Women's Festival in Reno, Nev.

RESULTS — Champion 18 and under: OCVBC Nike. The Reef Volleyball Club was 24th out of 103 teams. Champion 17: Nike NW Juniors 17 Air Max. Reef was 40th out of 81 teams. Champion 16: Sports Shack 16-1. Reef was 49th out of 188 teams. Champion 15: 951 Elite 15-1 Small, division included 111 teams. Champion 14: TVVC 14 Steve/Tommy Team. Reef was 95th out of 147 teams. The Reef 16-2 team was 115th out of 188 teams. Brock Redmond is the Reef director for the under-16 and under-18 teams. Midsummer Madness Girls' Tournament at Nordhoff

RESULTS — Championship: Santa Barbara 77, Nordhoff 55. Third: Rio Mesa 71, Santa Paula 37. Fifth place: Bishop Diego 84, Camarillo 49. MVP: Keani Albanez, Santa Barbara, freshman guard.

JV TOURNAMENT — Championship: Santa Barbara 68, Camarillo 62. Third: Rio Mesa 65, Bishop Diego 31. Fifth: Nordhoff 55, Santa Paula 46.

VENRURA WILDCAT GIRLS STANDINGS — Bearcats 7-1, Leopards 6-3, Bengals 5-4, Tigers 4-4, LIons 3-5, Panthers 2-6, Jaguars 2-6.

Note: Sabrina Lee of the Lions made an off-balance desperation shot at the buzzer to lift her team to a one-point win.

SOCCER

PIRATES CAMPS: Ventura College soccer coach Steve Hoffman is hosting his annual soccer camp Aug. 6-9. Half-day (9 a.m. to noon) and full-day (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) camps available. Ages 5-14 are eligible for half-day and 7 years and older for full-day. Advance registration is $100 (half-day) and $160 (full-day). BASKETBALL

TOURNAMENT OFFERED: The Heat Basketball Club will offer a Pre-Labor Day Tournament for boys' and girls' team. Entry fee is $300 with a three-game guarantee. Games will be played at the Pacifica High and Oxnard High gyms. Girls' divisions will be sixth grade and lower, 7/8B, 7/8A, JV and varsity. Boys' divisions will be grades 6, 7, 8, JV and varsity. FALL BALL: Ocean View PONY Baseball will host the annual Fall Ball League. Registration will be Thursday at Rusty's Pizza at 606 N. Ventura Road at 7 p.m. and also on Aug. 11 and 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sign-ups will be for individuals or teams. Information: 776-2038.
