CLU president resigns

John Sladek has resigned as president of California Lutheran University, one year after taking the job.

Sladek's resignation comes as the Board of Regents was reviewing his contract, specifically how much time he was devoting to his research.

The resignation is effective today.

"It was a mutual decision," said spokeswoman Lynda Fulford.

Sladek will return to the University of Colorado, where he will continue his research into the effects of Down syndrome and Parkinson's disease.

What was this dude's story?

Obviously he wasn't doing his job. Email all alumni received sounded as if the board was not pleased with him at all. There were undertones of "our bad, we'll pick better next time."

HMMMMMMMMM...I agree the alumni e-mail was a bit strange...had an "our bad" feel to it...

Perhaps there was some stem cell research taking place in his Parkinson and Down's Syndrome research that did not jive with a faith based institution...
Who knows...

This is a shame. It is unusual for respected scientists to enter into university administration, but when they do so at well-respected universities, it is common for them to maintain an active research laboratory. It is appreciated that this helps the both the university and the administrator, the former by enhancing its academic reputation and the latter by keeping them in touch with the academic world. Unfortunately, CLU does not seem to grasp this and appears to be making a mistake that will keep it mired in its present status as a mediocre institution.

It is not at all obvious that Dr. Sladek "wasn't doing his job," dana1230. As far as stem cell research goes, bballerdc00, there is no objective case that can be made for why this would not fit well with a "faith-based" university, especially when one considers thet the ELCA (the branch of Lutheranism that CLU is affiliated with) takes no stance on the moral status of stem cell research.

Top-notch university presidents like Sladek - bright, personable, worldly, ambitious - don't come along often, especially at schools like CLU. A real loss.
