Ventura raceway: Severson is the star of a talented field
Eric Severson shrugged off the heavyweight sprint car drivers trying to knock him out.
Severson started on the outside and led all the way in the 30-lap feature Saturday night at Ventura Raceway. Severson prevented points leader Greg Taylor from winning his 40th career feature.
"The track was unbelievable," said Severson, who earned his first feature win in the Ventura Racing Association sprint car division.
The fast field didn't make Severson flinch.
"Of course not. It didn't bother me. There's five, six or seven guys any weekend who can win," he said.
Brian Camarillo passed last week's winner, Kevin Kierce, on the final lap for third. Reigning champion Luis Espinoza finished fifth.
Taylor's second straight runner-up finish added to his points advantage. Taylor has 2,830 points through 13 races. Kierce is second at 2,695. Espinoza is third at 2,430. Dennis Rodriguez (2,350) and Rick Hendrix (2,245) round out the top five.
Rookie sensation Johnathon Henry is sixth with 2,060 points and Severson is seventh with 2,055.
Randal Dougan was victorious in the 20-lap sport compact feature. Points leader Joel Chavez was second. Trevor Fitzgibbon was third and David Peterson was fourth. Steve Klingberg was fifth.
Chavez has 1,735 points through seven races. Chavez has won five races.
Steve McGee of Carson City, Nev., weaved his way from 11th to first in the IMCA modified 20-lap feature. Reigning champion Jack Parker finished second to take over the points lead with 316. Randy McGraw is second with 315 points through nine races.
Brad Prows was third in the feature. McGraw was fourth and Randy Miller was fifth.
Rookie Austin Rodarte is fourth in points with 281 and Joe Weaver is fifth with 274 points.
Dennis Howell drove his Ford Focus midget to victory in the 20-lap main. Nic Faas was second, followed by Robby Josett, Jet Davison and pole-sitter Ricky Kirkbride.
Faas has 1,180 points through five races. Kirkbride and Howell each have 1,015 points to share second place. Nick Carlson is fourth with 950 points and Walt Johnson is fifth with 800 points.
Justin Kierce, the son of Kevin Kierce, earned his second straight VRA Junior Focus midget win. Austin Smith was second. Dakota Kershaw was third. Charlie Butcher and Jake Swanson rounded out the top five.
Through seven races, Smith has 1,480 points. Alex Bowman is second at 1,460. Austin Mero (1,455), Kershaw (1,435) and Kierce (1,425) round out the top five.
There will be no racing at Ventura Raceway on Saturday night. The Ventura Racing Association sprint car drivers will race at Santa Maria in the second race of the Bandit-VRA Grand Slam Series.
Racing returns to the Ventura County Fairgrounds on Aug. 1-2 with the Ventura County Fair motor sports show. Opening night festivities include a demolition derby, sport compacts, dwarf cars and NMRA TQ midgets. Another demolition derby will highlight the second night of fair racing. IMCA modifieds, VRA/USAC Ford Focus midgets and VRA Junior Focus midgets will be on the program.
Kids' racing on Aug. 1 includes the mini dwarf cars and junior midgets.
Paid admission to the fair allows spectators to watch the Ventura Raceway programs on both nights.
