Astros' Oswalt to miss start against Dodgers
Houston Astros ace Roy Oswalt will miss his scheduled start Wednesday against the Dodgers because of soreness in his upper chest that developed Friday night in Pittsburgh.
Oswalt threw his usual between-starts bullpen session Sunday, but still felt some discomfort in cartilage located between his sternum and rib cage. He is scheduled to start again July 31 in Atlanta, meaning he would go 11 days between starts.
"If all goes well, I don't think Roy will need more than one start," manager Phil Garner said Sunday. "Roy felt it a little bit today. It was a little bit better, but it's probably better this way."
With Oswalt out, Matt Albers (2-4) will start Wednesday against Los Angeles in Houston.
Astros' Pence leaves game with sprained wrist: Houston's Hunter Pence sprained his right wrist while batting in the fourth inning against Pittsburgh and came out of the game.
X-rays did not reveal any fractures, but Pence's return to the lineup is uncertain.
Troubled Olsen joins Marlins on trip: Florida Marlins left-hander Scott Olsen departed on a road trip with the team despite his troubles of the past week, including a two-game suspension and an early-morning arrest after he allegedly fought with police.
Olsen was still scheduled to take his regular turn in the rotation at Arizona, manager Fredi Gonzalez said, although the decision wasn't final.
"We're still kicking it around," Gonzalez said. "For right now, he's starting on Wednesday."
Olsen was arrested around 4 a.m. Saturday after refusing to pull over and getting into a fight with police. He was booked on charges of driving under the influence, resisting an officer with violence and fleeing and eluding an officer.
Police say the 6-foot-5 Olsen kicked them when they tried to arrest him at his house, and they used a stun gun to subdue him. He had bruises on his forehead Sunday.
The arrest came hours after Olsen pitched seven innings and earned a victory against the Cincinnati Reds — his first game since serving a two-game suspension for insubordination and conduct detrimental to the team. The suspension stemmed from a confrontation July 15 with pitcher Sergio Mitre.
Ramirez leaves game with injury: Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez partially dislocated his left shoulder on a swing in the first inning and left the game against Cincinnati.
With the count 0-1, Ramirez swung at a 76-mph breaking pitch from Bronson Arroyo, missed and hurt his shoulder on the long follow-through. He immediately grabbed his shoulder with a grimace and walked to the dugout.
The shoulder popped back into place before the inning ended, and Ramirez might be back in the lineup as early as Tuesday at Arizona, Gonzalez said.
Yankees welcome Molina, Henn; designate Nieves: Wil Nieves' big hits came too late to keep him with the New York Yankees.
The Yankees designated the popular, good-fielding backup catcher for assignment once Jose Molina arrived from Minnesota, where he had been with the Los Angeles Angels before the Yankees obtained him Saturday night.
"I was surprised that this happened," Nieves said. "But I'm positive. I know something good is going to come from this."
Molina, a defensive specialist acquired because he hits better than Nieves, was batting .228 with a .242 on-base percentage for the AL West-leading Angels. Manager Joe Torre also cited his contributions to success as part of two division-winning Angels teams as well as the 2002 World Series champions.
"He hits lefties well," Torre said. "He always hits that base hit to right that drives you nuts."
Rangers' Sosa held out of lineup: Sammy Sosa said he wasn't experiencing any problems after getting hit in the head by a pitch on Saturday, but Texas manager Ron Washington withheld the slugger from the lineup against Cleveland as a precaution.
Sosa was struck on the side of the helmet by a pitch from the Indians' Cliff Lee in the third inning, the second time he's been hit in the head this season. Sosa was down for several minutes and needed help from a team trainer to walk to the dugout.
Twins activate White from DL: The Minnesota Twins activated Rondell White from the disabled list. White has been on the disabled list nearly all season, ever since his strained his right calf muscle jogging out of the dugout on April 4.
