Senior activities: east county

AGOURA HILLS

Department of Community Services Senior Recreation Program

At 30610 Thousand Oaks Blvd., Agoura Hills. 818-597-7361. Senior Recreation Program, $12 per year, allows seniors 50 and up to enroll in classes, activities, special events and excursions.

Water aerobics: 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Archstone Apartments. A light, non-stressful exercise class for those 50 and over of all fitness levels. $45 per four-week session (eight classes).

P.A.C.E. (People with Arthritis Can Exercise): 10 to 11 a.m. Thursdays. For adults 50 and older with rheumatic disease and related problems. Sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation.

Stretch & Walk: 7 to 8 a.m. Wednesdays. Geared to adults 50 and older who are interested in exercising, meeting new people and socializing. Led by Dr. Michelle Labrum. Free to Senior Center members.

Duplicate bridge: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays and Fridays. Geared toward intermediate players. Seniors must bring a partner and be able to stay until 3 p.m.

Current events discussion group: 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays. Informal, in-depth discussion of current events affecting seniors. Program led by Paul Johnson uses videos, newspapers and handouts as resources. Free to Senior Recreation Program registrants.

Gentle yoga: 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Fee for a 10-week course is $21 for once a week, $35 twice a week, $45 three times a week.

Knitting and crocheting group: 11 a.m. to noon Thursdays.

Music Makers senior band: Noon Fridays. Music Makers is a four-piece combo band that performs at Senior Program functions, travels to retirement homes and has a variety of other activities. Information: Ted Weise, 818-889-8381.

Razzmatappers — performing tap dance group: 10 to 11 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, California Dance Theater, 5863 Kanan Road. Looking for women 50 and older who can tap at intermediate level. Rehearsals work on technique and learning new routines. Group performs at local venues. $35 per month pays for rehearsal time and costumes. 381-9080.

Jazzercise: 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Class designed for all fitness levels. $22 per four-week session, payable to instructor.

Senior Advisory Committee: 10 a.m. first Tuesday. Seniors 50 and older get involved with the Senior Recreation Program, assist with program development and city-sponsored special events, and discuss issues that affect local seniors.

Bingo: 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays and 1 p.m. Saturdays.

MOORPARK

Moorpark Active Adult Center

Senior Games registration: Registration forms for Moorpark's Senior Games VIII are being accepted through Sept. 7. The games offer competition for those 55 and older, and will run from Sept. 19 through Oct. 19. Events include bocce ball, bowling, darts, golf, horseshoes, over-the-line softball, poker walk, bingo, bunco, bridge and duplicate bridge, mah-jongg, pinochle, poker and table tennis. Maritime Museum day trip: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 17. Reservations and payment due by 4 p.m. Aug. 6. Docent-led museum tour, lunch, and two-hour narrated tour of Channel Islands Harbor.

Life-saving tips on acupuncture: 10:30 a.m. Aug. 13. Dr. George Shen will give this free presentation. Call the center to sign up.

Optimism 101: 1 p.m. first and third Wednesdays. Retired social worker and teacher Miriam Bethancourt will focus on feeling more upbeat using projects, games and just joking around. Call the center to sign up.

Poetry class: 10 a.m. to noon second and fourth Tuesdays. Retired English teacher David Wetterberg will lead in reading and writing poetry, with a goal of creating a printed collection of poems by class participants. Call the center to sign up.

Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program: Third Wednesday. A trained HICAP volunteer answers questions about health insurance coverage, HMOs, health plans, billing disputes and health insurance rights. Call center for appointment.

Writing for Pleasure: 10 a.m. to noon Thursdays.

Strength training and aerobics classes: Beginners 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays; intermediate 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Call center to sign up.

Simi Valley Senior Center

Second annual Community Games: Opening ceremonies to take place Sept. 12. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute: Eight-week course sessions at the center for those 50 and over. University-level courses taught by professional experts in their fields, but no tests, grades or college credit. The fee per class is $65. For registration, call 437-2748.

Memory loss counseling: 9 a.m. to noon last Tuesday of the month. The Alzheimer's Association offers free counseling for anyone with questions about Alzheimer's disease, dementia, senility and memory loss — including spouses, children, caregivers, friends and neighbors.

Sew 'n' Chat crochet group: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays. Bring mending, knitting, sewing or any handiwork.

Women's discussion group: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays. Group discusses issues such as aging, relationships, changing roles, positive thinking and good health.

Summer programs for those 50 and older

Registration is under way for a variety of one-day workshops, multiweek classes, clubs, and sports and exercise activities for people 50 and older. Cosponsored by the city of Simi Valley's Council on Aging and the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District, most activities take place at the Simi Valley Senior Center, 3900 Avenida Simi. Widows/widowers support groups: Three separate groups meet on Tuesdays: 11 a.m. for newly bereaved; 1 and 2:30 p.m. groups are for those who are ready to begin new lives as single people. Alzheimer's caregivers support group: 9:30 a.m. to noon first and third Fridays. Offered for family members and/or caregivers of those afflicted with Alzheimer's. 498-1988.

Grief support group: 9:30 to 11 a.m. second Monday. Specific to caregivers who have lost a loved one to Alzheimer's or other dementia disorders.

Senior Concerns Advocates: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Assistance dealing with housing, healthcare, insurance guidelines, benefit information, residential care, emergency assistance, utility discounts and adult protective services. Appointments: 495-6250.

SHOP AHOY

Shop Ahoy is a nonprofit service that provides weekly shopping and delivery of groceries and medications to elderly and/or disabled homebound Ventura County residents. Orders are taken on Monday for delivery on Tuesday. A delivery charge is added to the cost of groceries: $3 for orders up to $20 and $1 more for each additional $10.
