A Ventura man turned himself in to police Sunday afternoon to face felony charges in the hit-and-run death of Beth Dunn on Friday.
Randall Painter, 20, walked into the Ventura Police Department headquarters about 3:30 p.m., said Sgt. Jack Richards, a spokesman for the department. Painter was driving a Ford pickup. The pickup matched the description of the truck that police say hit Dunn as she rode her bicycle through a crosswalk at Victoria Avenue and Thille Street just after 9 p.m. Friday.
Police on Saturday said that Dunn was hit when the driver of the truck ran a red light, then drove off through the parking lot of the Ventura County Government Center.
Dunn, a 45-year-old clerk at Ralphs grocery store on Victoria Avenue, died shortly after midnight.
Witnesses gave police a detailed description of the truck. Richards said Painter might have turned himself in because the description was so widely known.
"I really give a lot of credit to our traffic division," Richards said. "They've worked all weekend, and they really got a good match on the truck."
The victim's father, Charlie Dunn, said Painter did the right thing by turning himself in.
"He must have had a conscience," Dunn said from his home Sunday evening.
Painter, a 2003 Ventura High School graduate, was booked into the Ventura County Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run.
A vigil will be held for Beth Dunn at Sacred Heart Church near Saticoy at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The church is at 10800 Henderson Road in Ventura.
A funeral service will be held for her at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Wonderful news that he turned himself in.

I hope they prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law. None of that "we'll cut a deal because he is so young AND he turned himself in" crap.

As noted in an earlier post, Painter has been busted three times for no insurance. Two times cited for speeding, the last incident was in March of this year. No insurance bothers me more than the speeding. Why do we let anybody get away without a vehicle impound for driving without insurance or a license? If we'd even enforce existing laws, we'd be able to get tens of thousands of vehicles off of the streets ... get more people into the public transportation system and help ease the burden we shoulder for uninsured/unlicensed motorists.

This is great news that he turned himself in - both for him and most importantly for Beth's family.
My sincerest condolences to Beth's family & friends. So many people posted to express what a wonderful person she was. I shop at Ralph's from time to time but never had the pleasure of meeting her. From the sound of things, this was my loss.
RIP Ms. Dunn.

My boyfriend and I were in the car next to the driver of the truck at the telephone light and I was the first to arrive at the site and tried to follow him as he made his get away...we made the 911 call and are grateful everyone at the light came to her aid. But what made me really mad about all of this is that there was a young female driver that was in a silver car behind the truck driver that honked her horn at him and waived to him at the telephone light. She too sped away and fled the scene and I hold her just as accountable because she knew exactly who did it and she left too.
I seriously doubt he meant to do what he did and I truly believe that this was just another wreckless driving incident because he was blasting heavy metal music and was trying to show off to the girl behind him.
I feel for everyone who is saddened by the loss of Ms. Dunn. She was a kind person and we need more of them in this world like her.
As for the young man, who is still a kid in my eyes, I am sorry you lost your future but you shouldn't have ran. May this be a lesson you never forget.

ayroberg - I am curious to know if the truck was a raised 4-wheeler with oversized tires.
As I noted on an earlier post, I've known Beth and Cathy through church since they were children. Cathy works with my granddaughter at Von's. I've seldom known anybody who depicts so well the love for God, and essence of innocence and love as these two wonderful sisters have since I've first known them.
At this juncture, all we can do is pray for Beth's soul and for her family and provide support to Cathy. I can't comprehend what she must be feeling now. Those two were as one.

We do NOT know if he was playing blasting music. Again people assume things. If it was a woman driver surely she would have been on the cell phone right !!!!
Im glad this young man did turn himself in.........
We will never know if he was under the influence now.....a bit to late for that. But yet he did the right thing. Now let the law handle it. And let the Dunn family have peace.
Again he messed up and ran the red light. But isn't it a law to walk your bike across the crosswalk also? Im not throwing blame here. Im just saying we need to let the law and courts handle it from here.

AnnaWhaat - ayroberg was at the scene of the accident, saw what happened, etc. So she knows that he was blasting his music.
Obviously this was an accident. I seriously doubt that Mr. Painter intentially hit Ms. Dunn. But he definitely should have stayed at the scene.
I'm very sad for her family.

I DO KNOW he was blasting music because I was sitting at the light right next to him. My boyfriends open window was parallel with his open window. I look up at him and saw exactly what he looked like and saw his tattoo on his driver's side arm. I had personal contact with the detective and gave the most accurate information because the information they received prior to Saturday afternoon stated false information. When this goes to court I will proudly testify because I saw everything and she was riding in the bike lane and he ran a red light. The song he was playing was Soulfly's, "Song Remains Insane." I can't get out of my head.…
I can assure you this information to be correct and true. I am haunted by it and I was only a witness I cannot begin to imagine the feelings of sorrow this family must have.

AnnaWhaat ... regarding loud music, ayroberg could hear heavy metal music when next to Painter's truck at the Telephone/Victoria light.
Regarding same, the CVC says:
27007. No driver of a vehicle shall operate, or permit the operation of, any sound amplification system which can be heard outside the vehicle from 50 or more feet when the vehicle is being
operated upon a highway, unless that system is being operated to request assistance or warn of a hazardous situation.
Interestingly enough, the person whose girl friend was killed a week or so ago due to his negligent operation of a motor vehicle, which included DUI, had been cited for 27007, specifically a loud stereo system, among other things.
These idiots who crank up their boom boxes are telling the world that they could care less about the rest of us. Stereotyped? You bet, and we aren't wrong.

To those who says all kinds of negative things about Mr. Painter.. Why can't you people just leave the young man alone.. We all know that he made a very terrible mistake and a life was taken.. So, I asked you people to stop the negativity and let the law handle it now.. If you have nothing nice to say, then don't say anything at all.. My heart goes for the Dunn's family, I am very sorry for your lost.. I hope you all find a peace of mind, and just to let you know that Mr. Painter is a wonderful young man... He would do anything for anyone, and you have to understand that he is only a kid and his life has changed forever because of this... This can happen to anyone, it could be your child, parents, or any of your family.... So think about what you are about to post in here... Just think if this was your child, how would you feel about other people saying bad things about your child knowing that he is a great person with a good heart? He was just SCARED!!!! I feel that he is already getting punished by this traggic incident.. He will live, and regret that this ever happen because, knowing that you have killed someone, isn't going to go away no matter how long it did happen.. IT WILL FOREVER STAY IN YOU.... As for the young Lady that was in the silver car... I don't know you, but i know you were just as SCARED as the driver that hit Ms. Dunn.. I am sorry for you too, I know that you are suffering and probably having nightmares of what happened that night... Don't let this negativity put you down... The woman on the silver car did came forward as a WITNESS.. Thank you for ending the search for Mr. Painter.. God bless both of the FAMILIES that are suffering from this accident...

Who freaking cares if he was blasting music or what he was listening to. Listening to metal does not make you a different person than anyone else.
<br>
someone is dead and the person responsible turned himself in. No need to argue, that acomplishes NOTHING!!
Posted by Equitable_Enforcer on July 23, 2007 at 3:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)
The point is, ThoughtPunk, that the rules are for the safety of all. Loud music has proved to be a significant distraction to drivers which is the reason for the law. An automobile is not the appropriate venue through which to tell the world of one's taste in music.
There is never an excuse to leave the scene of an accident, especially when a human life is at stake.
Possibly, some of you didn't catch the fact that Mr. Painter had, previous to this accident, already demonstrated during his few years of driving his lack of responsibility and concern for the rest of us by three times being cited for no insurance and twice being cited for speeding, the last time in March. The current incident was a continuation of his disregard for the rules that we must all live by.
I'd still like to know if his truck was raised and had oversized tires.

an_angel, I wonder if you would think the same way if it were someone in YOUR family that got killed by a hit and run driver...would you be so forgiving then?

And Anna..."But isn't it a law to walk your bike across the crosswalk?" is your question....my question is, isn't it the law to STOP at a red light? and "He messed up". I'd call that more than just a mess up, wouldn't you? A wonderful, giving person is dead from his "mess up".
Posted by an_angel_watching_over_u on July 23, 2007 at 4:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Vta63, yes i would! what else is there to do than to forgive... unless, you don't have a heart and don't believe in God... This have happened to me before.. one of my family got ran over by an ice cream truck.. the driver ran, and until now, he hasn't been found.. at least in these situation, the driver have a concious and wanted to do the right thing... it may have took him over 24hrs, but he still surrender himself to the law because it was the RIGHT THING TO DO!! i am not trying to argue with you or anyone else that post their comments in here regarding to this accident.. I JUST WANT EVERYONE TO STOP SAYING AWFUL THINGS ABOUT MR. PAINTER... NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO JUDGE ANYONE, BUT GOD... keep that in mind... he may have done a terrible thing, his judgement will come, but for now, i don't think anyone else should judge him... you don't know what kind of person Mr. Painter is... ALL YOU KNOW IS WHAT YOU READ... don't believe everything you Read on the news paper, because sometimes the words of mouth get TWISTED... I know Ms. Dunn too.. I always shop at Ralphs before they move to the location where is at now.. Ms. Dunn was always smiling and friendly, and she is always offering me if I needed any assistants.. I sure will miss her so much, and the smile she always had the moment she saw her customers she knew.. LIVES of both Families are forever change.. So, let's just leave it to the HIGHEST POWER when it comes to JUDGEMENT... P.S WHEN YOU CAN WALK ON WATER, THEN YOU CAN JUDGE!!

ayroberg just F.Y.I the young lady came forward as a witness...How did you know for sure that Mr. Painter was trying to impress the Young Lady? A lot of young man and women plays their music loud every day.. I don't know if you have any children that drives, if he or she is alone, I'm sure that he/she is playing their MUSIC LOUD TOO.. you may say NO, but you don't really know what they do, when you are not around.....

I'm not judging, just stating the FACT that he killed someone in the process of breaking the law...and I don't think what he did should be concidered a mess up...I do believe the words of an actual eye witness who was there to see it all happen from beginning to end. She and I have been friends for 30 years and his "mess up" took my friend away. So excuse me for being slightly angry.
Posted by an_angel_watching_over_u on July 23, 2007 at 4:56 p.m. (Suggest removal)
i can understand that you are angry and hurt of what happened and the fact that you lost a friend.. but let's not forget of what is going to happen to the youngman that lost everything too.. there are things that are happening to two different families... one is mourning for the lost of a child and one is mourning for their child that is wishing that none of these ever happened to him or Ms. Dunn.. but the fact is, it did and now we have to let the law take care of the rest... enough is being said about Mr. Painter, and like I said Ms. Dunn was a wonderful woman and she will be DEARLY MISSED BY EVERYONE THAT KNEW AND LOVED HER...

angel - I guess that you must have some type of extra sensory ability - since I don't see anyone saying anything degrading about Mr Painter. All I see are people commenting on the facts in the story. If playing his music loudly and trying to impress someone is considered to be a mark against him - then I think you are being overly sensitive to the comments being made. Almost every comment is in regard to him turning himself in and that justice is to be served. I guess I just don't see the negativity that you do ... tragic yes for all involved ... support both families if you can ...

GSTBAUER I do support both families... read between the line... you see what you want to see.. that's all that matters to you.. i know everyone that is commenting here are feeling sympathy for the Dunn's family... I do too!! I just know Mr. Painter personally and I just haven't read any nice thing being said about him... Only few people are caring for him.... I want to know if anyone cares that HE DID TURN HIMSELF IN... it sadden me, how sometimes we can be so judgemental... " DON'T JUDGE THE BOOK BY IT'S COVER " so, this is what i am doing... not judging anyone but trying to be here for both sides.. I've been to the site where Beth was hit.. i still can't believe that what had happened is so Real!! how i wish this was just a dream, and i can wake up the next day knowing that she is still here with us... smiling at us, greeting her customers, laughting with her friends and families... that would be so nice to wake up like that everyday... not just for me, for you, for everyone that loves and cares about her.. i'm sure that would be so nice to for the Painter's family... the reality of this ACCIDENT ISN'T JUST ONE OF THOSE BAD DREAMS... THIS IS REAL AND IT HAS HAPPENED...

Thanks Bea for clarifying that. Its just that usually when a woman is in a crash they blame cell phones so I was assumming since it was a young guy they did that with the music. My Mistake! sorry
slkrchck,Can you please point out where I was Harsh? Cause I certainly didn't mean it that way.
ayroberg,Thankyou for that info. I believe you!
Just wasn't sure if it was the truth or an assumption. But since you were there obviously you would know . Thankyou!!!!!
an_angel_watching_over_u ,I can understand you comment and feelings. He may be one of the best young adults in the world that would do anything for anyone. BUT he didn't STOP to help Ms. Dunn. In that fact, he should have.I understand he was scared. But he should have stopped. My prayers do go out to him and Ms.Dunn's Family and friends....
But this is a comment board and people are going to comment on the subject at hand. Its called free speech. And although it does hurt some. There is nothing we can really do. Just try not to read them.
vta63 , I just wanted to know the law for crossing a crosswalk on a bike!!! Didn't mean to sound so sarcastic as you make it out to be.....
Dont bite my head off !!!!!!!
ThoughtPunk, I agree with you! There is NO reason anyone should be arguing here.
If I offended anyone please forgive me. Perhaps I did word it wrong. I was just wondering about the law with bikes cause I see children doing that all the time.

I just wanted to remind people that no matter how often you say "If I'm ever in this guys shoes I'd stop..." Truth is the incedent was very intense in nature-- you never know how your going to react until it happens to you, especially when you're young. It's like trying to say if someone ever pulled a gun on you you would rush them before they could get it pointed or you would stand your ground bravely or run like hell-- truth is you just don't know, conciously thinking you would do something and what actually happens under the pressure of something so intense are often two different things.
It's tragic that a life was lost, and nice to see people cared for her in this world.
On another note, about bicycles on the road... if you or someone you know rides often please be sure they are safe and know the laws they must obey-- The bicyclist is NOT a pedestrian, they are a vehicle and mush abide be those laws. i've seen many times people riding bikes against the flow of traffic-- blatanly running stops signs and luckily the person who had the right of way saw them in time to stop-- Also rudely swerving through pedestrians on sidewalks (I've seen a couple peds hit by bikes this way). Also consider a helmut for those of you who don't like them, and lights for riding at night-- drivers have a hard enough time recognizing motorcycles in the dark, it's even more dangerous for cyclist. We need some way to spread this vital safety information; more often than not drivers out there are only keeping their eyes out for other cars...

AnnaWhaat-At a stop light you can ride your bike across with the flow of the traffic, Otherwise you must walk your bike across is the law. I know Ms Dunn & she always followed the Rules of the road. To Mr Painter. - Thanks for turning yourself in & Hope you being scared was your only reason for not stopping & nothing more serious. Even though by law you should have not left the scene.

This may sound increadibly insensitive to some of you... but people have been killed by hit and runs all over this country and many times they never find the person. Well this time the person turned himself in, not only that-- this article is incorrect in saying he probably turned himself in due to the description of the vehicle or something like that.
He turned himself in when he found out what had happened to the woman, he knew he had to muster all his bravery and do the right thing, if only for the family of the victim.
Also to the newt that posted his myspace, why would you do something like that... what if you got in trouble with the law-- or was even meerly suspected of breaking the law-- and someone went and posted your information?
And what's this I hear about the news releasing his photo-- tell me, why does this instance get such coverage when so many others go on unnoticed-- especially since he turned himself in. This is only telling people that if they get scared and run they had better keep running or else, is that what you want to teach society? You all should be greatful that he was able to find the strength to do the right thing-- but instead people are just crusifying him.
These people don't know a single thing about what this guy is really like. Instead they're just following everyone else and attacking him for a tragic mistake.
Just think about what this example is showing others-- people aren't going to stop getting scared and running from all this-- you're just showing them that they had better KEEP RUNNING or else...

Oh and by the way. He had turned himself in 3 hours earlier from what the article states... I wonder what else the reported may have wrongly relayed to the public.
Posted by Ventuckey on July 24, 2007 at 8:35 a.m. (Suggest removal)
TimeToThink... anything you say or do on the internet is public information. If you don't want anyone to know about you, don't have a social networking profile, it's really that simple.
This is getting so much coverage because of the careless nature of the suspect to have such blantant disregard for law and human life. To say he turned himself in because he found out what happened is craziest thing I've every heard. So you are saying that if he found out that she just got seriously injured and not killed then he wouldn't have come forward? Odds are that if nobody got a description of his truck, he wouldn't have come forward.
To the comments that he is still 'just a kid'. He's 20, you can't pull that card, time to grow up and be a man about things.
Out of all the comments here, the ones that are most disrespectful and outright nutty are the ones about how she should have been walking her bike in the cross walk instead... like if would have made a difference! He was driving a 5000lb truck at a speed of 50mph and ran a red light.
I'm really tired of all these people driving these huge trucks around like they are sports cars! They have a higher bumber height and are heavier and take a longer distance to stop. Studies show that if you are hit by a car (sedan, similar) you are more likely to survive.
pconvery99... I agree, maybe it is time to close comments on articles like these or have better moderation of the site because it is too easy for people like dennist480 to post hurtful and childish comments.

Look everyone, a innocent life was taken by a senseless act..you guys can say all kinds of stuff about this guy, but reality is a great person is gone(I never met Mrs. Dunn). I lost my dad and sister to a drunk driver several years ago and all she got was a year in jail and probation..Come on now, what the heck are this judges thinking?? Now she is out there probably
enjoying life and possibly drinking and driving
again, spending time with her family!! I can never call my dad again or see my sister again and she can be with her kids and her family everyday, yes I know you are probably thinking I am very bitter and angry but I have a darn good reason to be!! She also was in her early twentys when the accident happened, so I understand that he(Mr. Painter)probably is hurting too in this tragedy, but it sure took him a long time to turn himself in and now supposedly his life is over due to this tragedy, but hello people so is Mrs. Dunns!! Her family will feel this loss for the rest of their lives, just as my family is still feeling the loss of our dad and sister..I truly hope and pray that he is put away for a very long time and not just given a slap on the hand and put on probation. I'm sorry but this judicial system needs to change, because people like Mr Painter and the young lady who killed my family need to be put away for a long time, that is why so many of our family members are taken from us because the judicial system is sooooo bad...

weekendgirl1109, do you really think that if the girl was still locked up and remained there for life, that you would not miss your sister and father anymore? Do you feel that if you did the same thing to her (steal her away from her family) that you would go on with your life as happy as you were before that accident??
doubt it....
In regards, locking up Painter for life and making his life as miserable as possible is not going to bring Beth back, and will bring minimal "relief" to the pain everyone is enduring from the loss of Beth Dunn.

Ventukey-- as for all the coverage I'm just referring to these other cases that go unnoticed, other cases almost just like this one that no one seems to care about, just because the victim wasn't the perfect citizen or person. And the person responsible for their death goes on living like nothing happened. The person responsible here turned himself in, he did the right thing, and he's taking responsibility for this tragic event. As for why he turned himself in, first of all, reading back into the articles about this the descriptions are incorrect about his vehicle to begin with, sure there are some similarities but I've also seen MANY trucks out there that fit the description given-- even a couple with front end damage. You have no idea why he turned himself in because you don't know him. As for if she were only seriously injured, simple is that's not the case-- the family deserved some closure and he knew that. Young or not he still made an error in judgment-- one that more people make than we all realize (both young and old) and that's because we can NEVER truly predict what we are going to do in a situation like that.
You all are assuming this man wasn't a valued member of society-- you're all wrong, he was, but now due to a mistake many people would have made themselves, and him trying to make things as right a possible, you all will not hear of any such notions about the good person he really is. That's right: IS; he is still a good person. A good person who made a mistake that sadly took another good person out of this world.

Timetothink: I Agree with u. Just as someone aleady metioned 2 families r been hurt by this. Accidents happen and the reality is (Its never Fair) I don't think one wakes up in the morning ans says well I think today I'm just going to run over someone. I remember when I was riding my bike near Vons and elder gentlemen hit me which launch me about 6 feet. Instead of him stoping he just looked at me and drove off. Oh well, I'm just thankfull I lived to talk about it with only minor pain. I pray for both of the families and I belive that Mr. Painter would wish that this never happend.
I think this should remind everyone that life can change in a second. How many of us have avoided hitting someone before?
May God bless both families during this time of pain.

Beth probably have forgiven Mr. Painter because that's the type of person she is.. A loving, caring, and forgiving person.. That's what being a Christian is all about... This is why, I became a Christian. God asked us to forgive, because it helps the healing process.. I'm sure Beth wouldn't want Mr. Painter to suffer for the rest of his life, because Mr. Painter is already suffering for this horrific accident... Nothing else in this world would ever bring Beth back to us, if there was I away, I so would wish that for her family.. Mr. Painter is only 20 yrs.old, he still have a life to live, and can still give so much to others... You know, there are people out there that is always running away from the law, when something like this happens.. We need to give him cedit for turning himself in... The law had nothing to do with it, or the public description.. Yes, it took him long enough to turn himself in, and yes, it was wrong of him to run and have fled the scene.. I'm sure, when the Dunn's family found out that he turned himself in, they were a bit relieve because they don't have to wonder if the guy would ever be caught.. I am so, so, sorry for their lost, but I am praying for them and I hope that they will find in their heart to forgive Mr.Painter for this horrible accident that have caused their daughter's life in death... I am also praying for the Painter's family that Mr.Painter's life wouldn't end here.... I believe of being punished by the law, but we need to stop and think " TWO WRONG DOESN'T MAKE IT RIGHT "

well a partial thank you to the moderator for the partial censorship. at least you posted most of my comments.thank you for that. i've seen worse "attacks" on this site but ok. my point was lets not be quick to give our rights away in the name of "tolerance". we should be allowed to discuss any topic without being afraid of not being compliant enough.I say that with all sensitivity. again my condolences to both families.

dude, you left the scene. you and some one else both left. you did it because you had something to hide. do not even plead not guilty. if you do, you deserve more time. you are going to serve the time you deserve. you deserve the time for leaving. accidents happen and are usually excusable, but there is no excuse for leaving our friend to die. i don't hope the worst for you, i just hope you don't stretch out our system and do what is right. it will hurt, but it will end and you can move on. be a real man.

pconvery99-- I don't see how these comments are disrepectful to Ms. Dunn and her family, did I maybe not see a post before it was edited?
As it stands it seems you're stating that the responses reguarding Mr. Painter and in defense of his character, or even just some compassion for him over all the crap people are dishing out about what an evil person he is because he got scared and ran... If that's the case I say shame on you for such a comment...
everyone here (aside from that @ss who posted the comment about eisle 5...) has had nothing but condolenses for the Dunn family-- that in no way is disrepectful to her or her family.

One question...What does listening to loud music have to do with driving through a red light?? If you can't be attentive to your driving while the radio is on, turn it off!!

sawyer619...I am not saying that i would miss my family any less...what I am saying is people like mr painter and the girl who killed my family need to be punished for their crime, not given a slap on the hand!! How are they going to learn if they just get the lesser sentence, they will walk away thinking I GOT AWAY WITH IT!! Innocent people were taken away from their families and I mean INNOCENT people...They didnt ask to be hit or stood in the street and said PLEASE HIT ME!! SAWYER619..I take it you've never lost someone to tragedy so you have NO IDEA what it feels like to lose someone you love, I pray that this never ever happens to you or to anyone else but unfortunately, I am not a fortune teller and I know it will happen again and again because the judicial system doesnt work for us. Maybe Mr. Painter is a good man, I dont know him from jack, but for him to run and turn himself in a day later that tells me he has no conscience at all...My guess is he had been drinking and decided to drive home thinking it was just a short drive to his home or he was showing off like the other comments said and being stupid in that sense also. But no one will ever know because Mr. Painter will never tell, he will take that with him to his grave. If the judicial system would work then maybe accidents like this would never happen...Drunk drivers, crazy drivers who run red lights, and other irresponsible people need to be taken out of the equasion, and if that means putting them away for quite awhile then please do so, so we can all be safe on the roads.. Im sorry i feel this way an I have never wished anything bad on anyone but when I read stories like this whether it be a drunk driving accident or an accident like this, I just feel that these people need to be punished to the full extent of the law...

Weekendgirl--- What the....? How can you say he has no conscience?! No conscience woud have been not turning himself in at all, not showing any remorse for what has happened. It would seems you're not paying much attention to the facts here, you don't turn yourself in if you don't want to take the responsibility-- and you don't take responsibility when you have no conscience in the matter. It's obvious he has a conscience here.
The judicial system is not responsible for babysitting people who have sub par driving tendencies (except the drunk driving part-- and even then there's not much they can do after the fact)-- hell they can't even do much about road rage. Accidents are just that... accidents! You can't stop them from happening all together.
I think you have every right to be pissed about what happened to you, and how a drunk driver took family away--- but let me ask: how many times do you hear about a death cause by a car accident and immediately blame a drunk driver? I've seen a couple people who have lost someone to a d.d. and it's like they just can't get that subjuect off their mind and start imposing drunk drivers everywhere. I don't think it's healthy but I'm not psycologist.

carenc22 ,Thankyou! I just wanted to know what the law was about that. Thanks !
sawyer619,Good Comment!
TimeToThink, I enjoyed your comment and agree with it. It did bring things down to reality.
Ventuckey.Go back and try READING my question. NEVER did I or would I say that she was at fault. All I wanted to know was the law about bikes in crosswalks. NOW you have taken it the wrong way. So obviously your not reading anything but what you want to read and hear. I did go back and apologize if it sounded that way,it wasn't my intention at all. I do see alot of children riding thier bikes across the crosswalks and was just wondering about the law about that. Is that too much to comprehend?
sawyer619 ,I agree!
sog55,GREAT comment !!!!!!
an_angel_watching_over_u,Your comment was very touching.......I hope people take it to heart. Thankyou!
weekendgirl1109,Your comment saying this young man will be saying I got away with it ! Comeone.... only someone who gets away with something is someone who meant to do something wrong. You have already crusified him. Sad........getting away with something is getting away with something you planned. And in this case he did not.

Mr. Painter happens to be my best friend and i know him better than everybody and all you haters just talking and speculating need to can it ..honestly mr. painter is one of the nicest and sweetest people i know and the reason why he turned himself in is because he feels terrible ..hes the kind of person who would stand by you no matter what come hell or high water .. he would face it with a grin ...
sure your probably thinking that im a supporter of him .. and frankly your right .. however im not a person who cant see both sides of the coin .. sure he shouldnt have run .. but honestly put yourself in his shoes if you were that young .. and you did this .. can you honestly .. in your heart say you wouldnt do the same ... Mr.Painter is a wonderful person .. and he will be sorely missed

Mr.Painter may be one of the best friends in the world! BUT what he did by not stopping was wrong and people are going to judge him on that. You said he is the kind of guy who would stand by you no matter what. WELL in this case he didn't.
I do not know him, but he does sound like a nice guy who just plain messed up!!!!!! I wish him the best....And my prayers go out to both families!

You guys all need to just shut up and stop trying to be right about everything. Respect the families and mind your own business. It's so dumb how everyone fights on message boards. Everyone gets real defensive and courageous when you can't see the other person's face when you're typing these stupid comments like you know everything. Grow up.

DOes anyone here know the parents of this girl? When I saw her picture she looked very familiar to me, then I realized I had seen her at the Ralphs on Victoria which I just found out she did work there. However when I watched the video there was a picture of her and her sister and I was shocked. I went to school with 2 girls--twins and a little 'different' from the rest and I am sure these are the same 2! I was just wondering if they went to Montalvo School for kindergarten at least. I don't remember them after that. My teacher was Ms. Sexton.

Yes, Grow Up. Being empathetic towards anyone involved in this situation doesn't require your ideas or elaboration on what you think is right or wrong. A horrible incident occurred, and now families will face some pain and sorrow, I wish them all the support and strength they will need to get through it.

This is all so sad. Beth was not one to throw stones. Please do not assume you are helping anyone by throwing yours. I know that there is forgiveness for this man, even if you do not think he is worthy. Good thing it is not up to you! He will pay a bigger price than the law will dole out, and he will have to learn something that none of you have even thought. Beth would have loved him...just like she loved you....for no apparant reason.

Zany, they didn't go to Montalvo...I know because I went there during the 60's & '70's and it wasn't them. They lived in a different part of town.

vta63, thanks! I am trying to find an old class picture because I am sure it's them. BUTTTT, it was a long time ago! Did you have Ms. Sexton? I went for K-1-and half of 2nd.

I grew up with Randy, and I can honestly say that he is one of the sweetest guys i have ever known. Other friends have said that he wouldn't hurt a fly. While i do feel bad for the family in this tragic accident, and do not make any excuses for what happened, i think it is rude and harsh to judge someones Character by what the papers report. Do any of you know him personally as i do? Then do not judge on what you do not know. It is unfair and cruel. He did not go out that night and think, hey i will go end someones life. Thats why they call these things accidents, because they happen unintentionally. Randy is a great guy, and this could have happened to any of you, although you might not have fled the scene as he did. I feel very sorry for Beth's family. But I also feel bad for Randy.

When someone commits hit and run their character is judged by that action. Most people don't leave the scene of an accident unless they've been drinking, was he drinking? This is a comments section, if you people who know the hit and run driver don't like what is said here maybe you shouldn't be reading this.
Just because he's a nice, good guy doesn't change the fact that he ran a red light and left the scene, and the person he hit died. Sorry if people don't think that sounds like a very nice person. If he had turned himself in the next day I would think he turned himself in because he felt bad, but he waited until Sunday afternoon, knowing that eyewitnesses had given police detailed descriptions.

If, according to some, 3 beers in 3 hours doesn't constitute "being drunk", then if he stayed he would only have a misdemeanor against him, but by running, he added a felony to the charges...I do believe he was more concerned about himself than he was about Beth, lying there in the street and that he did wait until Sunday so the "evidence" had disappeared. Probably WAS the advice of parents and a lawyer...pittiful, just pittiful.
