CSU Channel Islands passed another milestone this week by earning accreditation and glowing remarks from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The university is to be commended for this achievement, which is official recognition that its students receive a quality education.
This four-year public university, long dreamed of for Ventura County, is already paying dividends, as evidenced by the graduation of its first inaugural freshman class. Several references were made at graduation to the pioneering spirit of the students and staff, which was noted by the accrediting commission.
University President Richard Rush told graduates, "The perseverance that all our graduating students today have demonstrated at Cal State Channel Islands will serve you well as you go on to the next expedition or adventure in your lives."
Ralph A. Wolff, president of the WASC accrediting committee, wrote in a July 17 letter to President Rush: "CSUCI has transformed historic buildings into a visually appealing learning environment in a very short time, built a new faculty and staff team essentially ex nihilo (out of nothing), designed and delivered innovative curricula, significantly engaged the community in the process, and has now produced its first cohort of four-year graduates."
He continued: CUSCI's implementation of learning-centered practices place it "far ahead of many much older and better-established universities within CSU, the state and nation."
In a note of caution, Mr. Wolff noted the "staggering number of tasks associated with building a new institution" and warned of potential faculty and staff burnout.
Pacing is certainly important, but motivating and energizing all these hard-working people are results: a gorgeous campus, combining old and new; a spirit of innovation; and opportunities open to the Class of 2007.
This university is in the process of bringing more to Ventura County than its residents may yet grasp. One of many examples is the Nursing Program, which offers a bachelor of science degree, and will train 66 students in the fall.
The graduation of the inaugural freshman class and this first accreditation are just the beginning. CSUCI belongs to all of Ventura County and the entire community can take pride in these accomplishments.
Incoming CSUCI students are invited this year to "Experience the Difference." We are already.

When we moved back to Ventura County my daughter transferred to CSUCI and was so happy she did!
She received an excellent education with caring and attentive profs, and an administration that has a personal touch.
She has graduated and is starting her Masters Program- As her Dad, I'm proud to say I'm a CSUCI Parent!
I tell everyone I know that is considering college-No need to go to LA or the Bay Area when you have such a great University right here!

You know, I've been to a lot of CSU, and by far CSUCI is one of the most well kept campuses, the buildings and the location are amazing, people who go there are very dedicated to their education, go CI keep growing. Hopefully Ventur County atracts a UC too!

I'm a CSUCI student, and an Orientation Leader this summer, and I can honestly say that CSUCI is the best school I've ever been to. (I've gone to four!) Here the professors really care, and they inspire students to make a difference and better the world. I could not have made a better choice than CSUCI.
