Hit-and-run suspect turns himself in
A 20-year-old Ventura resident turned himself into police this afternoon to face felony charges in the hit-and-run death of Beth Dunn on Friday.
Randall Painter walked into to the Ventura Police Department headquarters at about 3:30 p.m., said Sgt. Jack Richards, a spokesman for the department. He was driving a Ford pickup truck that matched the description of the truck that police say hit Dunn as she rode her bicycle through a Victoria Avenue crosswalk just after 9 p.m. Friday.
Dunn, a 45-year-old clerk at Ralphs grocery store, died shortly after midnight.
Witnesses gave police a detailed description of the truck, and Richards said Painter might have turned himself in because the description was so widely known.
"I really give a lot of credit to our traffic division," Richards said. "They've worked all weekend, and they really got a good match on the truck."
Painter was booked into the Ventura County Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run.

Thank you, Mr. Painter, for saving us more grief. Born 12/9/86, you have demonstrated that your vehicle should have been impounded long ago and you should have been banned from operating a motor vehicle until able to demonstrate maturity.
6/12/03: No insurance
4/19/05: No insurance
7/21/06: No insurance, speeding
3/17/07: Speeding
Our family having twice been victimized by unlicensed and uninsured motorists (both illegal aliens who spoke no English in our case), it is my opinion that automobiles should be impounded if a driver is unable to show proof of financial responsibility and a valid driver's license within 90 days of arrest/citation. 90 days after the impound, we should be able to sell the vehicle.
This is another case where the lawyers/judges have let us down. They had a chance to protect us from Randall Painter, but did not do so when they had the chance.

Mr. Painter,
Thank you for turning yourself in and holding yourself accountable for your actions. I hope that in doing so, the Dunn family can now focus on comforting and consoling their family.

it takes a big man to take responsibility for your actions. i hope you find peace, i'm sure this was unintentional. to the dunn family, condolences.

it's good that he turned himself in, but, in the long run, he would have saved himself a lot of trouble by remaining at the scene as the law requires. it sounds like he might only have turned himself in because it was highly probable that he would be caught.
let's see what happens in court. if he pleads guilty, then he will really have taken responsibility for his actions.

I meant to say, vehicles should be impounded immediately if no license or insurance. If no license or insurance in 90 days ... sell it and put the money in a pool to help defray the costs of insurance to those of us who follow the law. If a person shows proof of financial responsibility, then loses insurance, impound. If we don't tighten up, we'll continue to have thousands, if not millions, of drivers out there with no insurance that we'll have to pay for.

I think that " lil_loepard_grl_69" should know that we are not hear to judge and we are not given that right. We do not know what you would do in the same shoes until you live and walk in them. I do however have to thankful that the young man did turn himself in regardless. Beth was a friend to me and alot of other people I know her and her sister Cathy well. I am deeply sadden by her loss.

People absolutely have the right to judge others. Otherwise, bad behavior would go unchecked. And "Lil lepard grl 69" has the right to give her opinion.

I am so happy he turned himself in...you know, that really takes alot of courage, but it would have taken a whole lot more courage if he had just stayed there. I may not understand the reason he fled, but at least he's behind bars tonight so he won't have the chance to run another red light and seriously injure another pedestrian or driver with his reckless behavior.

I just wanted to say that my girlfriend and I were the ones who made the initial 911 call on Friday night. We were waiting at the Victoria & telegraph light next to the young man before the accident happened, so we had a very good look at the mans car and were able to provide the police with some details that were hopefully useful. We are both haunted by the horrifying scene, but I think it's useful to keep in mind that this young man is just a kid -- no excuse clearly -- but let us remember this before we pass judgment. As powtsie said, it is not for us to judge. Let us mourn the loss of who must have been a great person, and hope for the best and just outcome for the young man. This situation is obviously terrible from all angles. My girlfriend and I give our best wishes to all families involved and at the risk of sounding preachy, lets not be angry but hopeful.
as one final note - I think the citizens who rushed to Beth's aid should be commended because no more than 10 seconds had passed after the accident that several kind souls rushed to her aid. Ventura has some top notch citizens.

20 years old is not a "Kid", but I am sorry you had to witness that , Nate. Thank you also for making that 911 call also.
At least He turned himself in, and I pray the peace will overcome any hurt and pain, and anger this has caused.

I pray for the Dunn family. I am glad to hear he turned himself in. As for what nancy_4ever said race has nothing to do with Beth's death. I knew her and I am insulted by that comment. I would of felt the same no matter what the race of the person was.

Sympathy for him or her? The reason there is so much "sympathy" for her is because she knew half of Ventura, maybe more, and we are all outraged by the way she died. It has nothing to do with surnames or race.

How about some thoughts regarding possible solutions. This kid had already demonstrated that he was not mature enough to be behind the wheel. Three times busted for no insurance, twice for speeding, the last time in March of this year. I'm personally aware of numerous accidents recently where drivers have left the scene because they had neither insurance nor a driver's license. In three that I know of, citizens took down the fleeing drivers and held them for officers. If people with no license or insurance are not permitted to register a motor vehicle and if such vehicles are ALWAYS impounded immediately when it is determined that it is being driven by one who is not licensed or insured ... perhaps we can generated some use of our own public transportation system. I am angry about raising insurance rates which are caused by people like Painter.

It warms my heart to read that people rushed to her side less than ten seconds after the terrible accident. Thank you, Ventura People!! Beth is in a better place, and thanks to those great people at the scene, she wasn't all alone in her last moments...

I grew up with Randy, and I can honestly say that he is one of the sweetest guys i have ever known. Other friends have said that he wouldn't hurt a fly. While i do feel bad for the family in this tragic accident, and do not make any excuses for what happened, i think it is rude and harsh to judge someones Character by what the papers report. Do any of you know him personally as i do? Then do not judge on what you do not know. It is unfair and cruel. He did not go out that night and think, hey i will go end someones life. Thats why they call these things accidents, because they happen unintentionally. Randy is a great guy, and this could have happened to any of you, although you might not have fled the scene as he did. I feel very sorry for Beth's family. But I also feel bad for Randy.
