Two county programs slated for funding
WASHINGTON — Two public health programs in Ventura County are slated to receive $200,000 apiece in federal funding under an appropriations bill that cleared the House this week.
St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard would receive the money for the Latino Health Care League's diabetes initiative. The program works to promote diabetes self-management and care.
"Diabetes is a common, costly and debilitating disease that affects a growing population in our community, especially Latinos," said Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara, who requested the funding for the program.
"With proper education and healthcare, we can improve the treatment of those living with diabetes and prevent others from developing the disease," said Capps, who is a registered nurse.
The Ventura County Probation Agency also is in line to receive federal funding for its Juvenile Wellness Court.
The program works with other community agencies to provide treatment services for juvenile offenders with mental health and dependency problems.
"The Juvenile Wellness Court has demonstrated that their comprehensive approach can be more successful in rehabilitating these young lives than traditional approaches," Capps said.
Capps requested money for both programs in the House budget for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education for the coming fiscal year.
The House approved the spending plan on Thursday.
The Senate has yet to pass its version of the budget, so funding for the Ventura County programs will not be final until the House and the Senate work out differences between the two bills and the spending plan is signed into law.
