Thanks to a remarkable postseason run by its boys' golf team, Royal High ranks on par with the best Division I athletic programs in the state.
Royal received special mention in a 2006-07 season wrap-up by CalHiSports.com. The Marmonte League school was singled out for runner-up finishes in Division I boys' cross country and boys' golf as well as a 13th place showing at the state track championship.
Long Beach Poly was named as the Division I school of the year.
Led by Division I individual champion Michael Cybulski and Hudson Andrews, Royal closed out a remarkable run of state cross country team performances, including championships in 2004 and 2005 plus a second-place finish at the 2006 Nike Team Nationals.
"Ryan Luce has done a fantastic job with that program," said Royal athletic director Jim Wilber.
The golf team brought home hardware from a strong postseason run. It began with a first-place finish at the Northern Division tournament, a tie for first with Fresno Clovis West at the Southern California Finals and second at the state meet. Danny Katz was the section individual champion.
"We knew that we had (Matt) Hoffenberg, but we had no idea that the others on the team would be that good," Wilber said. "Things just fell into place."
At the 2007 CIF state track meet, Hudson Andrews won the 1,600-meter title. It was the fourth consecutive year a Royal runner has captured an individual championship.
Royal had the best overall showing among Ventura County large schools in CIF-Southern Section championship events. Besides section titles in cross country and boys' golf, Royal made its mark in wrestling, boys' water polo, girls' soccer and boys' track.
Making it through a strong eight-team league season helps Royal and every Marmonte League program, said Wilber.
"You play against the best kids every week," said Wilber. "That is why so many Marmonte League schools do well in the postseason.
"We have so many great coaches on staff and the administration is very good to the athletic program. Our administrators care enough about the kids that they help make things happen."
