Ventura raceway: Kierce takes the fast track to sprint car victory
Veteran sprint car racer Kevin Kierce had his hands full Saturday night on a fast Ventura Raceway oval.
Kierce celebrated his second win of the Ventura Racing Association season and held off points leader Greg Taylor in the 30-lap feature.
"Oh, my God, what a race," said Kierce. "It was fun and he ran me clean."
Taylor started 11th in the field and made a charge to his 39th career win in sprint car.
Taylor said the track was great.
"Kevin had a great run," said Taylor.
Kierce credited his crew for putting together a new car on short notice.
Brandon Thomson finished third. Defending champion Luis Espinoza was fourth and Eric Severson finished fifth.
Rick Hendrix was sixth, followed by Clark Templeman III and Brian Camarillo. Derek Buckley and Dennis Rodriguez rounded out the top 10.
After 13 races, Taylor has 2,830 points, Kierce has 2,430, Espinoza 2,430, Rodriguez 2,305 and Hendrix 2,245. Rookie sensation Johnathon Henry is sixth with 2,060.
In the senior sprints, John Richards started on the pole, but couldn't hold off a fast field. Danny Miller won the 20-lap race, defeating brother Wiley, a former champion. Ron Bach, another champion, was third. Richards had to settle for fourth and Bruce Douglass was fifth.
Steve Stasa is the points leader with 1,655 through eight races. Danny Miller is second with 1,640.
"We're highly competitive." said Danny Miller of racing against his brother. "He's always fast and races clean."
Bob Alderman is third in senior points with 1,640. Douglass is fourth with 1,635. Wiley Miller has 1,575 for fifth.
Ed Niedzwiecki ran away from the senior dwarf car field. Bill Van Praag was second. Dave Hume was third. Jon Prechtl and Gary Conditt rounded out the top five. Niedzwiecki leads the way with 1,890 points. Van Praag is second with 1,710.
Marc Lippert won the 20-lap pro dwarf feature. Lippert had to hold off Brian Saxton and Jim Scribellito in an exciting finish. Scribellito is first in points with 1,890. Brent Stevens is second with 1,775.
Ricky Lewis was the winner of the mini dwarf car I feature. Chris Noe was second and Cameron McCaule was third. Lewis is the points leader with 1,495. Tommy Velasquez III is second with 1,325 and Noe is third at 1,265.
Riley Helland was the mini dwarf car II feature winner. Cameron Dougen was second and Brennan Rogers was third. Helland tops the points with 1,360. Tyler Jerman is second at 1,275. Chase Lippert is third with 1,170.
Amanda Green won the junior midget race. Jessica Clark was second and Michaela Stanton was third.
Clark leads with 1,155 points and Green has 1,535 for second.
Ventura Raceway promoter Jim Naylor is celebrating 30 years of racing at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.
The sprint cars will return Saturday to Ventura Raceway. The sport compacts, dwarf cars, NMRA TQ midgets, mini dwarf cars and junior midgets will round out the racing.
