Man to be inducted into Hall of Fame

Don McMillan, 87, of Ventura, has been selected to be inducted into the American Combat Airman Hall of Fame at Commemorative Air Force headquarters in Midland, Texas.

While a Navy pilot in World War II, McMillan led six torpedo bombers in the Oct. 25, 1944, attack that sank the Japanese aircraft carrier Zuikaku off northeast Luzon in The Philippines.

The Zuikaku was the last survivor of the fleet of six carriers that had launched the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

"All the fellows were saying, By God, we got even for a change,'" McMillan told The Star in 2005.

A lieutenant senior grade, McMillan flew 25 combat missions from the deck of the USS Lexington.

According to CAF Col. Kenneth W. Fields, the induction banquet will be Sept. 21 in Midland. A total of seven men will be honored.

Each will have a plaque containing biographical information and photographs displayed in the American Airpower Heritage Museum at Midland.
