12-year-old is invited to Potter festivities

Four years ago, Daniel Boyce of Camarillo was one of 10 winners in a national Harry Potter essay contest sponsored by Scholastic Inc. The prize was a trip to London to hear author J.K. Rowling read from the fifth book in the series, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."

Daniel, then 8 years old, wrote about creating an Autism Cure Potion for his younger sister, Suzie, who is autistic.

Scholastic has invited Daniel, now 12 and a seventh-grader at Los Colinas School, and other contest winners from former book launches to New York City to celebrate the July 21 release of the series' seventh and final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."

Daniel's mom, Nancy, said the family will cut short their vacation in Colorado to travel to New York for the Harry Potter events.

In addition to attending a "Harry Potter Place" street celebration Friday evening near Scholastic's headquarters, Daniel will participate Thursday in a Potter trivia contest on NBC's "Today" show and appear July 21 on CBS' "Early Show."

Scholastic also asked the former winners to write another essay, this time about the "Power of Potter" and what the series has meant to them. Daniel's essay, which has been posted on Scholastic's Web site at http://www.scholastic.com/harrypotter/activities/pledge, will be published Friday in The Star's Opinion section.
